BELLIE HITS MAIDEN TON AS HYTHE WIN IN CORNWALL

By Web - July 15 2010
Playing with envy at the Cornwall Premier League ground of Callington. Hythe beat the homeside by 24 runs thanks to a maiden century from Ewan Bell. Hythe batted first scoring 228 for 4 with Bell 102 and Robbie James 55. Callington then gave it a good go thanks to D.Lee 94. He was out at 179 for 5 with the homeside still needing 49 off 6 overs. But Russell Moore returned to take 3 wickets and the Green Caps won. But a great day on a lovely ground, fantastic clubhouse & excellent hosts.

Mondays fixture saw the Green Caps travel 15 miles into Cornwall to play Cornish 'A' Division side Callington.

Greeted by a lovely facility Hythe were soon made welcome by a lovely big clubhouse and bar which certainly helped team selction. Captain for the day - Richie Froggett .Hythe won the toss and elected to bat first on what looked a great track. Ewan Bell and Tom Porter opened and put on 55 for the first wkt before Porter fell for 31. Matt Howe got 13 before being caught and at drinks Hythe were 80 for 2 with Bellie on 31. Told to get a move on Bellie upped the pace with Rob James looking like he relished being on home soil at the other end. The pair added 94 for the 3rd wkt before James was out caught for 5 with 6 overs to go. Bellie still needed 29 for his ton but with Kev James supporting well at the other end he brought it up with a four with 2 balls to go to great applause from his team mates. Next / last ball though he was bowled by Pook for 102 - Hythe finishing on 228 for 4.

Another fine tea and Hythe took to the field. Froggett and Edwards opened the bowling and in the 5th over Hunt was judges LBW to Froggett for 0. D.Lee looked quality at the other end and supported by chairman of selectors son A.Mortimore they added 35 before Mortimore was LBW to Edwards for 15. At drinks the home side were 95 for 2 and the game was evenly balanced. At 128 a mix up between the batsman - the unlucky A.Morris (who netted with Hythe at the Rose Bowl) was stranded by Lee at the other end and had to go for 27 thanks to a Matt Howe throw. Mike Graham bowled Cosgrove to leave Callington 149 for 4 and when Lee finally holed out to a delighted Rob James off Matt Howe for 94 - Hythe were back ahead of the game. 179 for 5 after 34 overs. Russell Moore then returned to take 3 wickets and when Howe bowled Davis for 0 Hythe had won by 24 runs in a very good game of cricket.
