HYTHE LOSE TOUR OPENER BY 2 RUNS

By Web - July 15 2010
Hythe travelled to the lovely setting of Whitchurch, Devon for their opening game of the 2010 tour. Unfortunately the clouds got greyer as the afternoon went on which resulted in a shortened game. A great bunch of guys looked after us all afternoon with plenty of friendly banter mixed in. Whitchurch batted first scoring 165 for 6 off 29 overs before the rain set in. After a fantastic tea skipper for the day 'Punchey' agreed on a run chase of 166 off 20 overs. Hythe gave it a go - Mike Edwards (45) and Luke Mills (26) set up the charge but with one over remaining Hythe still needed 21 to win. Addie de Jager three massive sixes in the first five balls leaving 3 needed to win off the final ball. As the ball flew towards the boundary one of the Whitchurch fielders produced a great catch to win the game causing wild scenes from the locals. Great Game

HYTHE & DIBDEN 2010 PLYMOUTH TOUR

Sunday 4th July

WHITCHURCH WAYFARERS vs HYTHE XI

OPENING TOUR GAME A CRACKER AS HYTHE GO CLOSE

Hythe arrived at the lovely cricket ground of Devon village Whitchurch just as the drizzling rain started to fall. Whitchurch play in the 'D' Division of the Devon Leage and were welcoming back several Uni lads for the first time. Luke Mills was elected to captain the first game and after losing the toss - Whitchurch decided to bat first.

Russell Moore and Richard Last opened the bowling and soon had the homeside in all sorts of trouble at 3 for 3. Mills got the tour off to a top start with a fantastic catch to dismiss Church off Moore for 2. Last then dismissed E.Smith 0 and M.Kerswill 0 thanks to a Mike Edwards catch. But a partnership of 114 between R.Frost 40 and J.Meadows in 14 overs changed the complex of the game. At drinks Whitchurch were 108 for 3 heading for 200 but Matt Howe dismissed both batsman and when play stopped for heavy drizzle at 29 overs the homeside were 165 for 6.

After a fantastic tea which will be talked about for many years the captains got together about going back out. 'Punchey' after consultation from some of his own half cut players decided that Whitchurch should declare and we will chase the total 166 to win in just 20 overs !!!

With 8 an over needed Hythe needed a fast start - hence Mills opened with Matt Stark and Ewan Bell. The pair added 18 in 2.2 when Bell fell for 14. Porter made 16 including a five . Hythe at the half way stage were 75 for 2 and in with a good chance. Mike Edwards 45 and Luke Mills 26 gave it a good go as chances went down and with 2 overs left the Green Caps still required 35. DeJager smashed Frost for 2x4's and a six meaning we needed 21 off the last over. Bowman went first ball for 10 but the batsman crossed to put De Jager on strike. 6 6 6 dot wide meant just three needed off the last ball but De Jager was excellently caught in the deep off Kersill for 33 and Hythe had lost by 2 runs.

A great game to start the tour against a good bunch of guys - as for Puncheys negotiating skills in the reduced rate !!!
