MOORE'S 7-27 BEATS THE OILERS IN THE WOODHOUSE

By Web - July 14 2010
7-27 from Russell Moore inspired Hythe to a 69 run win for Hythe 2nd XI against the old enemy Fawley in the Tony Woodhouse Trophy. When the last wicket fell there were just 16 balls remaining for the Oilers to hold out for a draw. Hythe batted first scoring 180 for 6 - Tom Richards top scoring with 49 and Matt Young 46. Fawley never looked like chasing the total - just more on holding out for a draw but Crouchey had other ideas. With half the competition completed Hythe just need to beat Sway in the next game to win the trophy for the first time in 4 years.

TONY WOODHOUSE TROPHY 2010

HYTHE SUN 2nd XI vs FAWLEY SUNDAY 2nd XI

Sunday 11th July

Hythe Leave It Late To Gain Victory Thanks To Moore's 7-27

Russell Moore 7-27

Hythe and Dibden took another step towards returning the Tony Woodhouse Trophy with a tense victory over rivals Fawley. A seven wicket burst from Russell Moore ensured a second successive victory in the competition with two draws from the remaining games enough to secure the trophy.

Fawley travelled to Jones’ Lane looking to better the defeat they suffered last year when Ben Smith took four wickets in his first over. They started well as Lawrence Reed won the toss and inserted Hythe.

The Green Caps skipper, Jonjo Stovell opened the batting himself alongside young Jack Owen. Both started cautiously against the opening attack of Matt Head and Ian McElhenney as pressure rose on the pitch. At 15 the first wicket fell when McElhenney trapped Owen LBW for 7 and a short while later, poor calling resulted in a mix-up between Stovell and new man Tom Richards resulting in the captain walking back to the pavilion.

The hosts settled after that with a 43 run partnership between Richards and Sam Mead to take the score to 73 when Mead was clean bowled. Richards then forged another partnership, this time with Matt Young, as Hythe began to assert control on the game.

Their 52 run stint was ended when Richards was caught and bowled by Dean Head one short of his fifty with the score 125-4. With things looking up, Kieran Chalmers came to the crease and helped Young to build a challenging total. Although Young was finally dismissed for 46 and two more quick wickets fell at the death, the Green Caps finished on 180-7 with Chalmers 20*.

In reply, Fawley started with a bang. A four first ball followed by another later in the over put the pressure on Hythe, but, last ball of the over Tim Bath held on for a caught and bowled to ensure Hythe struck early on 8-1.

Bath and opening partner Chalmers then pushed hard for a second wicket but Fawley held firm through the rest of their spells. They were replaced by Gareth Mead and Tom Huxley and with the score on 36, the hosts broke through again when Huxley bowled the Oilers’ batsman.

With their spells coming to a close just after drinks the score had meandered to 75-2 and with 16 overs to go there was still a long way until a result could be reached. At this point captain Jonjo Stovell brought out his trump cards in the form of Harry Smith and Russell Moore.

With the score on 80 it was Moore who struck twice in two balls to start the rot. A caught and bowled followed by a clean bowled delivery brought Ian McElhenney to the crease. McElhenney could only watch though as inroads were made at the other end.

With Smith bamboozling batsmen from the top end, Moore cut through Fawley with pace, quickly picking up his third, fourth and fifth wickets including opening batsman Nick Shrive for 30. Then, Moore took another two wickets in two balls as Hythe pushed the Oiler’s to the brink, but with only three overs to go they needed to finish the job.

It was Smith who provided the last wicket when he had McElhenney caught and bowled with just 14 balls remaining in the game to hand Hythe a crucial victory. Fawley finished 111 all out with Moore taking 7-27 in his spell.
