NEW MILTON 'B' vs HYTHE UNDER 13's

8th July @ Fernhill Sports Ground

Hythe Find New Milton 'B' a Tough Outfit

Harrison SMITH 24

Hythe Under 13's went to Fernhill Sports Ground confident of getting a win against the New Milton 'B' side, but they come up against a good organized side and fell 12 runs short.

New Miton batted first scoring 123 for 5 despite Sam Long's excellent effort of 2-13 off 4. In reply the Green Caps scored 111 for 7 with the lads it into the 20's - Harrison Smith 24, Alex Nicholas 22* and Jordan Blandford 22.

Alex and Sam Long opened the bowling and kept the two batsmen reasonably tied down in the opening three overs with 9 runs coming off them. New Milton were running quickly and confidently between the wickets with some good calling. Sam Long then took the first wicket in the fourth over with a brilliant slip catch by Elliot Carley taking the wicket and stopping a definite four. Alex bowled the fifth over and took a wicket on the 6th ball, caught again by Carley but not before being hit for 10 runs off the initial balls. New Milton on 21 for 2 off 5. New Milton never looked back after this over. The next 3 batsmen (T Drewitt - 28, T Jackson - retired 31, C Cooper - retired 30) kept the score rate moving swiftly at an average of 9 per over for the next 11 overs before Drewitt was caught by Sam Kelly off Jordan Blandfords 2nd over. Having hit 11 boundaries between them on the way, fourteen runs off the 16th over helped them onto 119 for 2, when Drewiit went in the 17th. Sam Long came on for the last over to try and stem the runs and kept them down to two runs whilst taking two wickets in the over, one caught and one run out.

An excellent score by new Milton B team of 123 for 5 off the 18 overs. Not expecting to be chasing such a high score we kept with the original batting line up to give some of the team a bat that hadn't had much opportunity in the latest games which they would need for our cup game. Quick singles needed to be taken to keep the run chase at 7 per over. With this in mind Matt Bennett found himself at the other end of the wicket after the first ball with his partner still in the batting crease. Not quite the start we wanted. Ben Fenton came in as No 3 and between Ben and Jordan they had 6 runs off the 1st over. Ben looking for all the runs he could, took 2 off his first strike and we had 11 off 2, unfortunately the runs dried up taking 3 off the next 3 overs leaving us behind the run chase, 14 off 5 overs. Jordan then started to knock some fours and was well supported by Ben. Ben was eventually bowled for 8 , in the 9th over with the score at 38 for 2 off 9 overs. Archie Gilbert came in as No. 4 to partner Jordan, Jordan then came out to the slow bowling of Jackson and was stumped in the 10th over having scored 22 runs off 33 deliveries.

The run rate required was now 10 per over. Elliot came in and went for a straight drive but was caught first ball. Score now 44 for 4 off 10.Harry Smith came in and with a high strike rate to maintain hit a 4 off his first ball, Archie looking for runs was caught in the 11th over and harry was joined at the centre by Alex. Score 51 for 5 off 11 overs, simply 10.4 per over, they started well both hitting boundaries, 11 runs off the 12th over, 10 runs off the 13th and 9 runs off the 14th, pressure was showing on New Milton as they threw past the wicket twice to give us 3 overthrows. Trying to maintain the momentum Harrison was run out in the 15th over off the first ball. Harrison top scored with 24 runs off 18 balls. Sam Long joined Alex in the middle and Alex drove 2 good 4's as the pair took 12 runs off the remaining 5 balls.Score 103 for 6 off 16 overs. 2 overs to go still requiring 10.5 per over.

Sam Long edged the first ball to leg slip and Alex took the chance to run, he made it to the crease but the wicket keeper took a throw at the other stumps and with a direct hit took the wicket of Sam Long. Sam out for 7 runs off 5 deliveries. Sam Kelly was now the new batsmen in at the bowlers end. Alex took 1 off the next delivery and then a wide ball allowed a bye, only 3 runs off the over and requiring 18 off the last over was a big ask..Last over was a dot ball, followed by 3 runs and three more dot balls, 2 off the last ball left us on 111 for 7 off the 18 overs. A valiant run chase which kept New Milton under pressure for a while. Good practice for the forthcoming game whether batting first or second shows we can get runs and put the opposition under pressure going for quick singles. Remain in 4th place in the league.
