By Web - July 13 2010
It's a season for Hat-Tricks as Sam Long became the third Colt this season to complete the task. Hythe batted first scoring 110 for 6. Alex Nicholas top scored with 27. Long then dismissed the first three batsman in three balls and only 33* from T.Loseby helped Pylewell reach 78 for 8 in reply. Billy Allan took 2-4 for the Green Caps and Sam Long 3-15.

Long Hat-Trick Destroys Pylewell's Top Order

Sam LONG - Hat-Trick

A hat-trick from Sam Long destroyed Pylewell's top order as they chased Hythe's 110 for 6. Alex Nicholas top scored for Hythe with 27. Pylewell in reply could only manage 78 for 8 thanks largely to 33* from T.Looseby. Long 3-15 and Billy Allan 2-4 were the pick of the Hythe bowlers as the green caps captured another 19 points in a fine season.

Alex won the toss and elected to bat at the sunny picturesque grounds of Pylewell park.

We were without our top two batsmen according to Toms stats - Sam Kelly recovering from Injury and Harrison Smith putting in an appearance at Sea Scouts. Sam Long opened the batting with Tom Copley, a few loose openers by the pacey bowling of Tom Loseby gave us a couple of byes and a wide but he was well on target for his sixth delivery when he clean bowled Tom for a duck in the first over. The second and third over gifted us a few extras but Ali Bryers and Sam cut a couple of 4's to fine leg and we were racing away at 29 runs of 3 overs.

The bowling of Pylewell tightened a little and steady progress was made until Ali was out LBW in the 6th over with a score of 12 and the score on 43. Jordan came to the crease and teased the fielders by popping the ball into the air but it landed between them on several occasions. Sam Long was defending his wicket well, scoring 15 before being caught at square. Alex came into bat at 56 for 3 off 8 overs, Tom Loseby the pacey opener came back on with his final over and bowled Jordan for 8, Archie Gilbert then defended well for his last 3 balls before being bowled in the 16th over, Alex took advantage of some loose bowling and top scored with 27, including 6 fours,he was well caught by the skipper one handed, bowling the penultimate ball of the innings, Alex driving for the elusive 30 not out. The Green caps finishing on 110 for 6 off the 18 overs, our highest score this season and a much better batting performance than last week.

Pylewell with a required run rate of 6 per over started on track scoring 17 off the first 3 overs. Tom Loseby scoring 13 of them with 3 boundaries. Sam Long clean bowled the No 2 for 2 with the last ball of his 2nd over and the 3rd over of the match, this followed in the 5th over with an LBW and Sam on a hat trick clean bowled the No 4, leaving Pylewell on 26 for 3 off 5. Pylewell struggled to keep up with the run rate and only Tom Loseby went into double figures, he eventually retired at 33 not out when he hit a good delivery by Ben Fenton for 6 in the 9th over. The wickets started to tumble and all the bowlers played a part with tidy bowling giving 17 extras away with 8 wides. Ali had his tightest patch of the season giving only 9 runs away off his 4 overs. Billy Allan had 2 overs and took 2 wickets for 4 runs, Sam Long with his Hat trick had 4 overs and took 3 for 15 and claimed the match ball. Pyewell managed to bat the 18 overs but could only manage 78 runs for 8 wickets.

A good all round performance by the green caps and good timing ahead of our cup match Q/Final on Tuesday.  Archie deserves a mention for his wicket keeping, the last two matches Archie has kept well with some fine stops from our quick bowlers, also stumped one of the Pylewell boys meandering outside his crease. Thanks to Tom Knight Owen who stepped in at the last minute for one of our grounded boys and took 1 run off 7 balls not out.
