HYTHE UNDER 13's vs MICHELMERSH

29th June @ Thornberry Avenue

Hythe Book Semi-Final Slot With Comfortable Win

Alex NICHOLAS 22 & 4-12

Hythe booked a place in the semi-finals of the Forest Cup with a 47 run win over Northern Section side Michelmersh & Timsbury. Hythe now play Calmore semi's. Just to clear things up - Michelmersh were officially the home team but playing away, we were the away team but playing at home, but playing at Thornbury Avenue which was like we were both playing away - now that’s sorted, to the match.

Alex won the toss and elected to bat, team instructions were that we had 20 overs to bat out and to bat themselves in. Their opening bowler had Sam Kelly caught at mid off on the 2nd ball of the match, Sam Long in as No 3 took one run in the remainder of the over. 1 for 1 off 1. Lewis Allen bowled the 2nd over and his left arm swinging deliveries kept Alen and Sam defending the ball , claiming 2 byes off the over.

Sam Long and Alex opened the bowling and Alex had the opener caught for 4 runs in the second over, Sam had the No 3 caught off the 3rd over for a duck with M+T on 10 for 2 off 3. With clouds in the air we needed to keep the score below 43 off 10 overs for the cup match rules in case it rained. Alex then had the No 2 caught at Mid off for 2 runs. M+T now on 21 for 3 off 6 overs, Sam Kelly bowled a maiden 7th over, Ali bowled the 8th over caught and bowled the No 4 for 1.Sam Kelly bowled the 9th taking a wicket and Ben Fenton the important 10th and kept the pressure on M+T having the No 7 caught by Harrison for his 2nd catch of the match. After the 10th over, M+T were on 29 for 6, a rained off match would give us the tie so the pressure was off.

After a partnership of 43 runs Sam Long was caught at Mid Off for 21 runs. Harrison came into bat as No 4 and took his time to settle in , Alex was then caught at Mid Off for 22 runs and Ali followed him to the pavillion 2 balls later , caught at - Mid off. Harrison then started to hit some boundaries before being caught at Long on, thoughtfully bringing some of their other fielders into play, Harrison dipping below his 100% strike rate but still retaining the highest runs per innings at 16.6. Jordan followed Harrison into the pavillion 2 balls later and the green caps now on 81 for 6 off 16 overs had a reasonable score to defend. Archie, Tom and Billy batted out the remaining 4 overs, with Tom caught for 2 and Arcie 6 not out and Billy 7 not out off 5 balls gave us a score of 99 to defend.

The opening bowlers Theo Pritchard 4 overs 2 for 6 and Lewis ASllen 4 overs 0 for 15 kept us tied down at the start but the pick of the M+T bowlers was Matt Elswood taking 4 wkts for 10 runs off his 3 overs. Michelmersh had only scored once above this during the season with the majority of scores in the 50's so it was our game to take provided we bowled to our potential.

The next 10 overs were shared out with Ben taking a wicket off his 3 overs, Billy Allan took a wicket off his 1 over, Harrison and Jordan bowled tight overs and Alex clean bowled 2 in the 14th over. Ali came back on in the 19th over and took the last wicket by smashing the bail into two pieces. Michelmersh finished on 52 all out off 19.3 overs

The Green Caps into the semi finals after a good all round team performance, Alex took 4 wkts for 12 runs off 4, Ali 2 wkts for 5 runs off 1.3 overs. Ben and Ollie did not bat but Ben had a tidy 3 overs and Ollie took over the gloves from Archie in the 9th over as he had a swollen thumb. Ollie played a blinder, no byes and he took every ball thrown at him even off Sam Longs over - Well done to the whole team. On we March - home to Cadnam in the semis -to be arranged.
