A scorching Sunday morning saw the U11s conquer second in the table Paultons by a whopping 36 runs.

The score board got off to a slow start for Paultons’ first pair with only 4 runs scored off the bat. Hythe kept the runs low during the second partnership with a clean bowled from Neal Ried (1-9) and a caught and bowled for Tom Knight-Owen (1-9).  Jacob Mould (1-2) delivered the only (wicket) maiden of the innings with a super catch by Tom Knight-Owen.  The fourth partnership saw district player Tom Smart add 17 runs from 4 boundaries to Paultons’ total, only to be reduced from clean bowleds from Pieter Lever ((1-8) and Sam Copley (1-16).  With the visitors finishing on 246-5 even coach Tom Huxley started to wake up from his sleepless Saturday night to the prospect that the U11s could deliver success on their final league match of the season.

Hythe opened with a cleanly hit four from young Sam Fenton’s (-1) second ball.  Looking to achieve some of his usual, Jacob Mould (-1) went to slog the first ball of the second – the ball reached the boundary but his bat reeked havoc on the stumps.  Sam achieved his second boundary but also fell prey to Paultons’ Max Jenkin’s bowling.  With ground to make up Hythe’s second and highest scoring pair added 29 to the board; with singles, a double, a triple and a boundary to his name Neal Reid (12*) worked superbly with partner Tom Knight-Owen (9) who in turn added 2 boundaries and some singles before his wicket fell.

Half way and the ninth over, with 12 runs entirely from wides taking the total to 248, saw a turning point for the green caps.  The game became one of defence; Sam Copley (1) and Tom Ladbury (8) took runs carefully, managing to keep their cool (and their wickets) whilst increasing the safety margin.  Hythe’s final pair took to the field with coach Tom’s (or was it Mrs G’s?) mantra of ‘defend, defend, defend’ ringing in their ears.  Freddie Molyneux (7), not being able to resist the urge to run, made an impressive dive just short of the wicket during their first over while the crowd collectively held their breath.  With a change of tactics Freddie went on to hit three boundaries, which added to a couple of singles from Pieter Lever (2), took Hythe’s total to 282-5, a clear win of 36 runs.  According to Hux – Awesome!
