THRASHING

By Web - June 28 2010
If there's one defeat in a season thats hard to take on a Sunday - it's the local derby against the Oilers. Sadly despite having a decent side out - Hythe were blown away by Kev McCarthy's side by 9 wickets. Hythe batted first and despite Addie de Jager scoring 31 and Matt Howe 24 - were all out for. Super Kev taking 2-13 off 8 for the oilers. Fawley took just 20.3 overs to knock off their target as Tom Gates (again) and Steve Cox ripped through Hythe's bowling attack.

HYTHE SUN XI vs FAWLEY

DISMAL DISPLAY BY HYTHE AS FAWLEY ROMP HOME

Adriaan de JAGER 31

Over the years the one game the Hythe lads have always been up for is the Fawley local derby. Yet Sunday the green caps put in one of their worst Sunday performance for many years - going down by 9 Wickets. Once again in the space of 6 days Tom Gates showed what a fine batsman he is scoring 80* for Fawley after the Green Caps meagre total of 135 despite having 12 batsmen.

Hythe welcomed rivals Fawley for another ‘friendly’ derby in a 40 overs contest. The Green Caps batted first with the unlikely combination of first team opening bat Matt Howe and clubman Andy Woods. Although 30 was put on for the first wicket it was Howe who was first to depart with 24.

Woods was then joined by skipper Paul Quinnell before both were dismissed by Hythe’s third team bowler Kev McCarthy.

Adriaan De Jager came in and played some shots while Matt Young watched from the other end. Unfortunately, when De Jager was dismissed for 31 the score had dribbled onto 90-4 off 28 overs and at a dangerously slow rate.

Sean Tongs came in and picked up the scoring with a quick 19 but after that Hythe struggled to push the score as Matt Young, Russell Moore, Tom Richards, Tim Bath, Jonjo Stovell and 12th bat Tom Huxley all departed cheaply to close the innings on 135.

In reply Hythe needed to strike early against the dangerous Tom Gates and Ben Streather but they were denied an early breakthrough.

Tim Bath and Russell Moore both pushed but the first wicket only fell on 51 when Streather was bowled by Moore. Skipper Quinnell then tried De Jager and Luke Blackwell but despite all their efforts Gates still managed to record another fifty.

In the end Tom Richards and Tom Huxley were brought on to bowl but Gates (80*) and Cox (30*) saw Fawley home with 19 overs to spare as Gates struck two sixes in three balls to complete the rout.
