Hythe Under 13's suffered a 3 Wkt defeat at the hands of Mudeford in what Coach Tom Nicholas described as a poor performance in a game they should have won. Hythe batted first and were shot out for just 88 in 16.1 overs. Harrison Smith top scored with 26 & Ali Bryers 10. Hythe fought back in the field as Sam Long and Alex Nicholas took early wickets and the seasiders were struggling at 72 for 6. 20th May @ Jones Lane

Under 13’s Off Colour In 3 Wkt Defeat

Harrison SMITH 26

The Green Caps won the toss and elected to bat against one of our mid table competitors. After our recent batting performance against Ringwood, our hopes were high for another win. We had 9 runs off the first over with the aid of 5 wides, Harrison and Sam Kelly were the openers but Sam Kelly was caught in the 2nd over going for a wide ball. Sam Long came in to partner Harrison and between them they put on some quick runs with good calls and quick singles.  Harrison had 14 runs on the board when he hit our first six of the season, to celebrate, he duly hit the next delivery in the same spot for another whopping six, in the same over the bowler had some success having Sam Long caught for 2. Harrison follwed Sam into the pavillion in the sixth over reaching out for a short, slow delivery and was caught and bowled. Harrison top scoring with 26 and maintaining his 100+ strike rate at 114%. Ali Bryers was the only other batsman to hit double figures with 10 runs and the team unable to keep the ball out of the air and learn from the previous fallen wickets gave Mudeford simple catches. Eventually we bowled out for 88 runs in the 16th over. Nine of the batsmen being caught out. A poor total considering we were on 46 for 3 after 6 overs.

Mudeford required 89 to win with a run rate of 5 per over to maintain. With a decent bowling performance we still had every chance of winning the game. Sam Long took 2 clean bowled wickets in successive balls in the 3rd over to put the pressure on Mudeford now at 13 for 2 off 3 overs.Confusion in the 6th over had the two Mudeford batsmen at the one end and Harrison threw the ball to Alex to have the 3rd wicket run out. Alex then had the 4th Batsman caught by Harrsion  and at the end of the over Mudeford were 21 for 4 off 6 overs and looking unlikely to get the required runs. Mudeford had other ideas and with some loose bowling by our regular bowlers, Mudeford began to get back into the game, B Turner (No. 5)  stayed at the crease whilst a couple of wickets fell and scoring 5 fours through a decent spell, top scored with 28 runs before being clean bowled by Billy Allan. He was the only batsmen in double figures for their team as well. Mudeford by this stage were on 72 for 6 off 13 overs and although we tried to keep the ball on the strip Mudeford achieved their total with 2 overs and 4 wickets in hand.

A poor performance batting and bowling cost us a victory that was there for the taking but hopefully we will peak in the cup match which we need to arrange within the next week. Harrison has to be congratulated on his batting performance and some good work in the field, a run out and catch credited to him. We all have bad days and looking on the bright side we all had it today, heads up for the next matches- Michelmarsh in the Cup and Pylewell Park away on the 24th June.
