Hythe Off To A Flyer In Tony Woodhouse As Jonjo's Men Topple Holders

Hythe and Dibden began victorious after day one of the Tony Woodhouse trophy with an away win at Sway. Captain Jonjo Stovell importantly won the toss and after electing to bowl, saw his side dismiss the hosts for a mere 110 with Harry Smith taking five wickets. Despite a collapse the Green caps made it over the line thanks to 48* from Sean Tongs.

After narrowly missing out last year on the TW trophy, Hythe were desperate to start well with possibly the toughest fixture first: away at Sway. For the first time in years Hythe won the toss and were able to bowl first which put the hosts under pressure.

Hythe’s openers Josh Mead and Russell Moore were both able to put early pressure on Sway and were rewarded with a wicket each in their first spell. Sway then fought back through Woodfine 24 and Richards 21 but two wickets in two balls from Richard Last opened up the Sway middle order.

Then Harry Smith came on and the damage was done. In his six overs he took five wickets for just nine runs as Hythe ran through the rest of the Sway line up. The hosts crashed to 110 all out under the pressure of Smith’s spin bowling while Moore removed Dave Marshall at the other end.

In reply, Hythe were looking to coast home but Sway had other ideas. Zac Miller was first out for a duck and although Gareth Mead played some excellent and aggressive shots for 19 he too fell to the opening bowlers.

Then Hythe’s colts showed why we never get a big score at Sway by collapsing horrendously. First Sam Mead fell for a duck, then Tom Richards and Matt Young were dismissed in quick succession before finally captain Jonjo Stovell was bowled round his legs for another duck to leave Hythe on 45-6. Fortunately, Sean Tongs and Harry Smith were able to steady the ship and their unbeaten 67 run partnership got the Green Caps over the line and to an important first win. Tongs finished just two runs short of his half-century while Smith made a composed 15.

With two home fixtures up next for Hythe they will hope to seal the tournament at home this time and finally bring the trophy back to Jones’ Lane.
