UNDER 15's WELL BEATEN @ TOTTON & ELING

By JC - June 8 2010
The last thing you want after Lymington 'A' is to face Totton & Eling 'A' on a  flat pitch. But Richie Froggett's lads put in a decent performance with only 10 men. T & E batted first amassing 134 for 3. Josh Mead was Hythe's most effective bowler 1-19 off 4. In reply Hythe lost Zac Millar and Richard Jones early but Kieran Chalmers (31) proved he could stand upto the best - well supported by the in form Josh Mead (21). Hythe finished on 71 for 8 - a 63 run defeat. Bring on the smaller clubs please.

HYTHE UNDER 15's vs TOTTON & ELING

30th May @ Southern Gardens

TIME FOR THE MINNOWS PLEASE !!!

Kieran CHALMERS 18

For the second week running Hythe Under 15's came up against Southern League Colts Sides in Totton & Eling and found the age gap and quality a too tougher challenge.

On a hard wicket all the Totton batsman got in to knock up 134 for 3. Josh Mead 1-19 off 4 was Hythe's most economical bowler. Hythe found the going tough against a good Totton bowling attack finishing on 71 for 5 with Kieran Chalmers 31 & Josh Mead 21 putting up a good challenge.

It was a bright and breezy day in Totton and despite another great performance in the field Hythe could not match it with the bat again. The fielding performance was all the better when you take into account that we only had 10 players although as luck would have it so did Totton and Eling!   Having played joint top team Lymington last week the boys faced the other top team Totton and Eling a week later with a very similar outcome.

Batting first T&Es openers put on an opening partnership of 58 before Hythe disposed of both openers in the 9th over, one a fortunate run out although it was quick thinking from Josh Mead to get a touch on a straight drive which then hit the wickets and the other a comfortable catch for the skipper Kieran Chalmers off of a good delivery from Josh. Alas, the next wicket did not fall until the final over of the innings with a catch by Elliot Carley from the bowling of Chris Griffin, which was followed the next ball by the No.3 batsman retiring having made 40 not out.

Three dot balls from Chris to finish meant all the runs came from just 4 batsmen with a fairly tidy bowling performance that only saw 16 extras conceded which isn't bad going. Josh Mead was the pick of the bowlers with a spell of 4 overs 1 wkt for 19 runs. It left Hythe needing 135 runs to win which has to be said was kept lower due to some excellent stops in the field against some pretty good batting.   So to the batting which saw Zac Miller and Richard Jones open. First over was a tight maiden with Zac unable to get off the mark which meant Richard facing the first ball of the second over which resulted in him being bowled out trying to hit out from the off (he has got a defensive shot - he just doesn't like playing it much - but a quick pat on the back and some encouraging words and he's ready to use that defensive shot next time out - well at least once;-)

That brought Kieran Chalmers to the crease a bit sooner than hoped and after consolidating for a couple of overs he began to push the singles and hit a couple of useful straight drives down the ground to the boundary. Unfortunately Zac was clean bowled at the start of the 10th over having made 8 at which point Hythe were only on 24 for 2 with a pretty big hill to climb. In came Josh and managed a boundary in the first over he faced. Kieran and Josh then revived some hope and urgency into the innings with a quick fire 26 in just 3 overs! However, having hit consecutive cover drives to the boundary Kieran was then clean bowled for 31 trying to defend one that he was apparently not quite ready for (one to learn from!). In came James Bidwell immediately trying to get his favoured pull shot away. James made 4 before being very unlucky to be run out when the stumps were hit by a great throw with only one stump to aim for.

Next up was Jack Knight Owen who made added a single but ably supported Josh who decided to at least go down with a flurry managing to hit a few more runs and another boundary before being bowled out for 21 on the last ball trying for one last big hit.         Hythe & Dibden ended on 71 for 5 with T&E giving away a miserly 6 extras so credit to them for being so disciplined.    Two tough games in a row for our young under 15s side but there were truly many positives to take from the performance.
