Bogey Side BAe Do It Again - As Hythe Have An Off Day

Luke MILLS 27

Hythe and Dibden 2nd Xl's excellent start to the season took a blip on Saturday at the hands of one of their bogey sides - BAe System. It's the fifth straight win the Christchurch side has recorded over the Green Caps as they won by 3 wkts at Jones Lane with 9 balls remaining.

Hythe won the toss and elected to bat first on a bone dry wicket. Things got off to the worst possible start for Hythe when Matt Young was run out for only 3. with the score on 22. Tongs scored 24 before he was 2nd out at 31 in the 11th over. Two wickets then fell in quick succession - Wayne Effeny bowled by Eeeley for 14 and Tom Porter LBW off Weatherall for 4. - Hythe 47 for 4 off 15.

Mike Edwards and Mike Bowman had moved the score onto 72 just before drinks when Edwards fell caught behind off Weatherhall for 23. 72 for 5 at drinks.Bowman and Luke Mills then added a valuable 47 for the 6th wicket before Bowman was caught behind off Weatherall for 23. Two wickets then fell in quick succession - Mills bowled by Eeeley for 27 and Gary Howe took a 4th ball duck. The young ones -Moore and Powell then added 35 for the 9th wicket before Russell Moore was caught off Storr for 14 and when Chalky White was LBW for 2 Hythe were all out for a disappointing 165. Lee Powell finishing on 21 not out.

BAe needing just 4 an over got off to a patient start - 36 for 0 after 10. Moore came off after 5 overs 0-18, to be replaced by Wayne Effeny. He then claimed the opening wicket - bowling Boucher for 39. Eighteen runs later and after the dangerous Eeeley smashed White for a six, Chalky got his own back - bowling him for 12. - BAe 73 for 2 just after drinks. Storr (playing the anchor role) and Young then added 21 before Young was caught by White off Powell.

At the 30 overs mark BAe had moved onto 103 for 3. They added 25 more before Weatherall was caught & bowled by Mike Edwards for 21. Two more wickets fell in quick succession - Storr run out by Chalky White for 52 and Turvey run out by Matt Young for 1. - BAe 138 for 6 and when Jennings stumped by Gary Howe off White for 5 Hythe were back in with a shout BAe 142 for 7 off 38 still needing 23. But when Owen smashed 12 off White's last over the visitors were almost home. Moore returned for the final fling but Owen hit 7 off the first 3 balls to win the game for the Cristchurch side.

As always a good game played in a really good spirit. Hythe now have to forget about their off day and lift themselves for next week and Verwood.
