Bowlers Shine As 2nds Turn Over Fawley & Go Top

Wayne EFFENY 4-36

Hythe and Dibden 2nd Xl continued their 100% start to the season with a victory over local rivals Fawley at the Hardley School ground. Mike Edwards, on his return to his former club, put in a superb all-round performance to guide the Green Caps to a seven wicket win.

Both clubs came off the back of opening day wins last weekend to set up an intriguing contest to see who could claim local bragging rights. Hythe skipper Mike Bowman, for the second week running, won the toss and inserted the opposition.

Fawley opened with B Streather and J Church who hit a match winning 61 against Suttoners last time out. The pair began well against Hythe’s opening pair of Russell Moore and Mike Edwards but, after 44 had been added for the first wicket, Edwards struck a massive blow when he bowled Church.

Wayne Effeny then replaced Moore and was at the centre of a Fawley collapse. The Oilers fell from 67-1 to 83-6 during Effeny’s spell. He picked up four wickets with the help of two Matt Young catches and some decidedly poor shot selections from the Fawley middle-order.

Hythe were excellent in the field all day and with the Fawley batsmen in confusion two run-outs aided the host’s slump. At the end Lee Powell came on and picked up a couple of late wickets in his one over to complete the Oiler’s innings on a meagre 115 all out.

The Green caps were looking to finish the game convincingly when they came out to bat but with Young being dismissed for a duck more care was taken over reaching the target.

Sean Tongs and Effeny put on 27 for the second wicket before Effeny was trapped lbw by Hilton who bowled economically for figures of 10-7-8-1. The slow run-rate ensured tension was mounting on the side-lines as the overs ticked away.

However, Edwards punished his old side when he joined Tongs at the crease with a number of attacking strokes. He and Tongs added 51 for the third wicket which took the Green Caps to within touching distance of the win. Although Tongs was bowled for 43, Edwards 43* and Bowman 4* saw the visitors home with wickets to spare.

Two wins from two and the Green Caps remain on top of South West Regional 2 with bragging rights staying at Jones’ Lane.
