Kev's Super 4 Gets Hythe 3's Off To Perfect Start

Kev McCARTHY 4-31
On a cold damp afternoon at Blackfield - Hythe 3rd XI got their season off to a fine start with a 47 run win over Hamble 3rds.
Star of the show the ever young Kev McCarthy who took the first four wickets of the Hamble reply and only a missed caught and bowled (and a thought of buying a jug) robbed him of a 5 for on his league debut for the Green Caps.
Hythe went into the game with two changes with Zac Millar and Harry Smith coming in. Once again Pete Stevens had prepared a good wicket and the lads were determined to put in a winning peformance for their skipper and wish him well.
Stand in skipper Tony North lost the toss and Hythe were put into bat with drizzle falling. After a 10 minute discussion it was finally agreed that Zac Millar and Harry Smith would open but unfortunately this time both missed out as Hythe were soon 11 for 2 with the ball nipping around. That brought Tom Richards and Sam Mead to the crease and the pair added 34 for the 3rd wicket before Mead fell for 27 inc 2x4's and a six. When skipper North went for 12 Hythe were 82 for 4 at the half way stage. Richards was playing the anchor role well until he was bowled by Brown for 27. Jonjo Stovell and Josh Mead then added 43 for the 6th wicket before Mead fell for 12. Stovell went onto score a fine 31 before being 8th out at 144. Hythe lost their final 23 wickets for 6 runs finishing on 150 all out.
Hamble's reply was just two overs old when an excellent catch by Sam Mead gave Kev McCarthy his first wicket. With Luke Blackwell getting movement and bounce at the other end things looked good for the green caps. The score moved onto 24 before McCarthy struck again bowling Morse for 14. In his next over he caught & bowled Chawler for 6 and Hamble were 25 for 3 off 10. At 39 McCarthy claimed his fourth wicket bowling Horne for 6 and only the thought of buying a jug prevented him from a diving catch and a five wicket haul. At the half way stage Hamble had moved onto 56 for 4.
Chiverton replaced Blackwell and at 57 he had Brown caught one handed by Blackweell in the gully for 7 - excellent catch. Three more wickets fell in the sixties. Chiverton bowled Roe for 1 then Josh Mead had Leach very well caught by brother Sam in the gully for 19. Chiverton claimed his third wicket bowling G.Burgess for 0 - Hamble 67 for 8. With the young Burgess not wanting to bat Hythe needed one more wicket but they were having difficulties getting rid of veteran J.Phillips and Hamble skipper Andy Burgess (known as Chris Tavare for obvious reasons). Chiverton finished his spell of 10 with 3-18 and Joh Mead an impressive 1-18 off 5. After 10 stubborn overs and 36 runs it was Tom Richards who finally got the final wicket - another good catch by bucket hands Sam Mead his third of the game. Phillips finally removed for a good 23. Tavare finished on 8 not out. Hamble 103 all out.
An excellent friendly game despite the conditions. Well done to all the Hythe lads who kept going throughout in the cold. (well the banter certainly did) Games will get tougher but there's a good atmosphere and the lads are going to get stronger and stronger

Thanks to Gareth & Val Mead for an excellent tea, Woody for scoring and the Groundsman Dave who had to clear up a lot of wet grass cuttings.
