Sunday 20th September

ASHURST vs HYTHE XI

Played at Boltons Bench

HYTHE FAIL IN RUN CHASE BY 2 RUNS

Mike EDWARDS 59

Last Sunday's fixture saw the Hythe travel to the 'home' of New Forest Cricket - Boltons Bench. Steeped in tradition nothings changed from twenty years ago - horses in the outfeld, horse muck and a bumpy outfield - yet its always enjoyable to play there and watched by plenty of grockles still on their holidays.

On a lovely afternoon Hythe lost the toss and fielded first in a 35 over game. Mike Edwards picked up an early wicket thanks to a catch from Rich Froggett and the homeside struggled to 32 for 1 off their first 10 overs thanks to some tight bowling from Edwards.

S.Park 25 and I.Cox 35 picked up the momentum but good bowling from Kev McCarthy 0-21 off 6 and Harry Smith meant that Pagey resisted in bowling First teamer Richie Froggett. The homeside ended their innings on 148 for 8 off their 35 overs. Harry Smith 2-32 and Jonjo Stovell 2-13 doing the most damage. Had it not been for the 26 wides Hythe bowled the score would have been much less.

In reply Hythe got off to their normal poor start losing 3 wickets for 15 runs. Rivalry between Matt Young and Zac Millar all afternoon meant that Matt wanted a strike rate competiton when the two batted to find out who was the slowest scorer. Sadly their was no competition as Matt was bowled by Sarisbury's Southern Leager P.Jewell first ball. Only Zac Millar 19, James Page 18 and Mike Edwards 59 put up any resistance as the Ashurst bowlers bowled the right lines. But Hythe were still in with a shout needing 16 from 11 balls when Edwards finally fell 8th man out but the tail couldn't do it and Ashurst won by 2 runs despite the efforts of Harry Smith 18*.
