HYTHE XI vs BREACHFIELD GREEN (Herts)
JUST LIKE OLD TIMES AS NORTHY LEADS GREEN CAPS TO 1 WKT WIN IN FINAL HOME GAME
 |
| Tony NORTH |
| 88* inc 9x4's |
As another season of cricket at Jones Lane came top a close - a great game of cricket against Hertfordshire touring side Breachwood Green ended with former Hythe Sunday Captain Tony North leading the Green Caps to a 1 wicket victory with an unbeaten knock of 88 not out.
The Bank Holiday Monday fixture saw Northy make it a double winning weekend on his return as skipper after also beating Goodwood on Friday. Plus with the two league sides both winning - it was a great way to sign off at Jones Lane for another year.
A youthful looking Hythe side were left chasing 226 to win from 40 overs and got home with 9 overs to spare with Northy robbed of his ton by number 11 Steve Chiverton who hit 14 runs off 3 consecutive balls.
On a lovely afternoon Tony North skippered the Hythe side and negotiated Hythe into the field. Hythe got off to a perfect start when Breachwood gifted them a wicket with a crazy run out. They then had to wait for their second wicket as the visitors took advantage of a good batting track. Ben Smith bowled a good spell of 2-27 off 7 whilst Luke Blackwell his opening partner 0-27 off 5.
Tom Richards bowled the impressive Jeffrey for 37 but all the middle order picked up valuable runs for the tourists. Merchant 64, S.Johnson 34, Law 29 and Weeks 27. Jonjo Stovell was the pick of the Hythe bowlers 2-35 uphill off 8 as the visitors closed on a testing 225 for 6.
Hythe got off to a poor start when Harry Smith picked up a duck. That brought Tony North to the crease to partner Sean Tongs and much relied on these two if Hythe were going to get close. The Guru though got out in the strangest of circumstances when he smashed a ball onto the head of silly mid on. The went into the wicekt keepers gloves but there was no clapping as everyone was concerned for the health of the Breachwood player who luckily just had a bump for his actions.
Zac Millar (14) and Paul Quinnell (34) added valuable assistance the the Hythe skipper. Quinnell smasjinh 2 sixes in the process. Ben Smith and Tom Richards fell quickly but as Noth brought up his fifty he found strong support in the form of Stovell. The pair took the score to within 20 with plenty of over left when Stovell backed up and was run out for 27. Luke Blackwell and Kev McCarthy went soon after leaving Hythe 213 for 9 needing 12 and Northy stranded up the other end on 88* with 5 balls remaining in the over. Thankfully for Hythe, the Breachwood bowler lost his line bowling Chiv 3 dollies which he smashed for 2 fours and a six and Hythe won by 1 wicket.
A great way to end the season at Hythe which we thank Breachwood for making it such a good game.
