ANOTHER MIDWEEK DEFEAT FOR GREEN CAPS BUT GOOD EXPERIENCE

Zac MILLAR
30 in 22 overs

Hythe's midweek game this week ended in another defeat as the Green Caps took on Ashford Hill from Berkshire who play in the North Division 1 of the Hampshire League. Hythe were chasing 192 to win off 35 overs and after a very slow start Hythe struggled to gaim momentum and and finished well short despite another half century from Sean Tongs and 30 from Zac Millar.

Rob Saunders was captaining his fourth midweek game still looking for his first win. The tourists who had beaten Milford on Sea on the last ball the previous day - batted first and got off to a steady start before Stovell had Kiwi R.Parera caught behind by Tony North for 9. A 2nd wicket followed when at 63 eleven year old Ali Bryers had J.Parker caught by Barge for 7. Next over and Tom Barge got his first wicket - caught by Quinnell for 37.

The middle spell though proved the turning point for the Berkshire side as they upped the tempo. At 26 overs the score had moved onto 121 for 3. Tea was taken early as a 20 minute heavy shower struck over the ground. With the game reduced to 35 overs the Ashford boys now decided to get a move on. Chalky White did however remove S.Evans for 42 and Chiverton had K.Perry caught by Chalky White for 53. But the last 9 overs produced another 90 runs Ashford ended on 191 for 5 off their 35 overs.

Hythe lost both openers Tony North and Harry Smith early and at 10 overs were struggling at 19 for 2. The run rate increased over the next 10 but at drinks (18 overs) Hythe were just 52 for 2 with the batsman more interested in preserving their averages. At the 27th over with the score on 104 Hythe lost both Zac Millar 30 and Sean Tongs 53. At the 30 stage Hythe were out of it at 116 for 4. Tom Porter tried to up the pace with some big hitting but was caught for 8 and despite a quick fire 18 from Chalky White and 15 not out from Rob Saunders Hythe finished on 153 for 7 and 38 run losers.

Thanks to Ashford for the game and good luck with the relegation battle back home.
