Hants County Div 2
HYTHE 1st XI vs BASINGSTOKE & N/HANTS
Saturday 15th August
FROGGETT 6-10 DESTROYS BASINGTOKE BUT HYTHE STILL WOBBLE TO WIN & SAFETY
 |
| Richie Froggett 6-10 |
Hythe 1st XI achieved the win they wanted to secure County 2 survival thanks to a top bowling performance by their player of the year Richie Froggett. His figures of 6-10 was the best by a Hythe bowler this season. Asked to bat first - the visitors tumbled to 110 all out in just 32.4 overs and Hythe knocked off a win with 3 wickets to spare. Sean Tongs top scored with 38*.
Stand in Hythe skipper Robbie James once again won the toss and had no hesitation in fielding first in this must win game.
Injury doubts over Richie Froggett was soon brushed to one side as the all rounder took 6 for 10 off 10 overs. Only L.Renge 25 batting at 8 and V.Van Der Linde 25 batting at 11 put up any resistance as they upset Rob Saunders bowling figures. There were also one wicket a piece for Saunders, Weall, Effeny and Edwards as the visitors at tea looked a side destined for County 3- 100 all out
Praise due though as after the break the North Hampshire side fought back as Hythe lost key batsman Rob James - given out caught for 8 off Iftikhar in just the 4th over. Mike Edwards and Sean Tongs then added 31 for the second wicket before Edwards was bowled by Van der Linde for 12 in the 12th over - Hythe 40 for 2. That soon became 45 for 3 when Froggett was caught for 4. Wayne Effeny 2 and Kev James 12 followed and at drinks Hythe were 78 for 5. Game wide open.
James Page hung around to give Sean Tongs valuable support as the pair crawled towards the Basingstoke total with only 22 runs scored off the next 10 overs. But the partnership of 22 proved valuable before Page finally went for 9 with the score on 102 . Richard Last then went for 0 and Hythe 106 for 7. Thankfully no more scares as Sean Tongs 38* and Jon Weall 2* saw the green caps home to a 3 wkt win. The visitors will be left ruiling the 26 extras they gave away.
The result means County 3 for Basingstoke next season after one year in County 2. Hythe meanwhile after a season of non stop injuries will enjoy the last two games knowing there County 2 status is safe.
