HYTHE SUNDAY XI vs NEWPORT GENTS
Sunday 9th August
Hythe Collapse To Defeat As Newport Far From Being Gents.
The first ever meeting between Hythe and Newport Gents ended in a 37 run defeat for the green caps. Hythe missing youth in their side thanks to the Tony Woodhosue game - looked comfortable chasing 203 at 142 for 3 at only 23 overs but the rot set in and they collapsed after a fine 58 from Richard Lasst and 43 for Luke Mills. But the game will be remembered for the Gents turing up with 9 men - we lending them Steve Miller who played impressively, the terrible attitude of A.Williams and the refusal of a runner for Pagey.
Hythe welcomed new fixture Newport Gents to Jones Lane in what was hoped to be a good fixture. Hythe were greeted to a ' we only have 9 players which was not a good start but after taking the field we managed to supply then with Steve Miller who was definately up for turning over his former club.
Hythe were put into the field on a solid track and the Gents got off to a cracking start scoring 100 off the first 15 overs. Tom Barge went for 25 off 3, Mike Bowman 40 off 4 as Hatcher and Williams were enjoying the conditions.
James Page then made a much needed change and Rob Saunders added spice to the afternoon with some very good pace. He had Hatcher well caught by Woody for 35 and Revie for 0 soon after. Colts dads Mark Richards bowled a decent 4 over spell for just 17 and Dave Huxley 4 overs for 19. Chiverton replaced Richards and in tandum with Saunders managed to drop the run rate down. Saunders finally had Williams caught by Last for 70 at 137 which brought Steve Miller to the crease
Saunder finished his spell of 8 wth an impressive 3-24 whilst Chiverton wicketless went for 25 off 8. That brought Tom Barge back to the attack and he snapped up the next 3 wickets to finish with 3-35 !!! HOW !!! and Newport Gents ended their 40 overs on 202 for 6
Hythe opened up with Mike Bowan and Rob James and got off to a good start with 25 coming off the first 4 overs. But James then got a good one from Small and he was bwoled for 17. Bowman soom followed for 4 and Hythe 38 for 2. After a confrontation with Umpire Woodsy - Williams went to field by the dog bin sulking that he didn't want to bowl again. That assisted the new batsman and Luke Mills and particularyly Richard Last took control of the game.
Last blasted a quick fire 58 including 11x4's and a six as the pair added 83 in just 10 overs to set up Hythe nicely. Mills then went for 43 with the score at 143 for 4 - Hythe needing just 60 off 17 overs. But the next 6 wickets went for just 22 runs to give Newport Gents.
All credit to the visitors for the win but to not allow the skipper a runner for his bad ankle is unacceptable and makes them unlikely to be asked back next year.
