HYTHE XI vs CYPOS CC (London)

LONDONERS TAKE HYTHE AFTER POOR START FROM THE GREEN CAPS

Tom RICHARDS	Sean TONGS
Senior Best 7-0-23-3	63 inc 8 fours & 1 six

A poor start at the begining of both innings was the difference between the two sides as Hythe entertained London Touring side Cypos at Jones Lane. The visitors scored 2-8 for 8 off their 40 overs with Tom Richards taking a senior best 3-23. Hythe were always behind the run rate after a pedestrian start by Matt Young and Sean Tongs saw only 17 off the first 10 overs (to the frustration of skipper Chalky White) and finishing 43 runs short.

Starting in bright sunshine skipper for the day Chalky White offered the decision to the Cypos skipper on what to do - he said we'll bowl Chalky said no you won't we want to make a game of it - are you sure !! Hence Cypos batted.

The decision was fully justified as Hythe openers Richard Last and Kev McCarthy bowled a pile of pants during the first 9 overs as the visitors rustled up 45 for 0 - forcing Chalky into a quick rethink. He then brought Tom Porter and Harry Smith into the attack but Cypos proceeded to score runs quickly and were soon 93 for 0.

Chalky rung the bowling changes once again and found a saviour in Tom Richards who then took 2 wickets in 2 balls - first bowling Garrard for 43 and then having Cromack caught by Harry Smith for 0. At 109 Jonjo Stovell got in on the act having S.Sritharan cruely judged L.B.W by one of his own players for 43 and when Richards then had Vernon caught by Last for 4 the visitors were 113 for 4. That soon becames 122 for 5 as Stovell bowled Horgarth for 4. Good comeback by the Green Caps.

A 35 run partnership then occured between R.Hubbard 44 and V.Anandakumar 19 before the latter was bowled by the returning Last. 45 runs were added for the 7th wkt taking the score to 202 when White got the first of his two wickets. Cypos then closed on 208 for 8 off 40 overs. Pick of the bowling for Hythe Tom Richards 7-0-23-3 and Jonjo Stovell 7-0-17-2.

After tea Hythe opened with Sean Tongs and Matt Young looking for a positive start. But the pair got bogged down with just 17 coming off the first 10 overs. Young was then bowled for 3 brnging in Harry Smith who also went quickly for 3 - Hythe 26 for 2 off 14 overs - less than 2 an over not good enough. Sam Mead played positively befoe holing out for 13 at 45. We then had a 54 run partnership between Tongsy and Tony North which saw the guru bring up another half century. At 99 for 3 off 26 Tongs then went for 63 soon followed by North for 14. Richard Last got a first baller but Tom Porter finally show the innings some ambition as he scored a quick fire 22.

As the overs run out so did the batsman and Hythe finished 165 all out off 37 overs and a 43 run defeat. Fingers crossed for an improved performance next week when the Green Caps entertain two more midweek touring sides.

The game was played in good spirit against a friendly Cypos side who apart from their lack of spending at the bar were a pleasure to entertain.
