HYTHE XI vs SOLENT WANDERERS

Old guard fall short against new blood.
Hythe’s annual fixture against ex Hythe football team - Solent Wanderers which included of no less than 9 players who have at one time played cricket for Hythe - fell short of their target against the new young guns of Hythe Cricket. Jonjo Stovell and Luke Mills helped The Green Caps set a challenging target on Friday night.
In their annual fixture the Solent Wanderers captain, our own ‘Chalkey’ White won the toss and elected to field. This meant the Hythe openers Tom Porter and Zac Millar could send the visitors on their way, but it was the openers who were sent packing as both were dismissed cheaply.
Jonjo Stovell and Luke Mills then put together a partnership with Stovell, in his usual fashion - I’m not sure what that is either - picking up the runs. Mills decided on a more aggressive approach and after two sixes he was finally dismissed allowing Sean Tongs to come to the crease.
After Stovell and Tongs were dismissed the Green caps limped to 137-7 at the close with ‘old boy’ Wilson picking up 3-0-8-3.
In reply the Wanderers met the fierce opening pair of Matt Howe and Rich Last - both bowling spin - but somehow both picking up wickets. With the total looking far away it was down to Kev James and another of the Wanderer’s middle order to stump up the total and they managed to get back into the game when Tongs’ first over was put away for 13 meaning 10 runs per over were required for the last three overs.
This worried the Hythe skipper enough that he brought out Russ Moore, much to the visitors dismay, to bowl the final two overs which went for just six runs for the loss of two wickets. To top off the evening Chalkey White was run out on the final ball and victory was sealed for the hosts by 27 runs which meant the Wanderers could finally get to the crucial part of the match when they could enjoy the barbeque and beer.
In the end a great atmosphere surrounded the Wanderers appearance again this year and once more the Hythe youth managed to stave off embarrassment. On a positive note the result was closer than last year and Chalkey must feel next year the win is on the cards.
