Punchey's 64* Can't Stop Under 17's Sign Off With 1 Run Victory
On a pleasant evening the Under 17's rounded off their season with a 1 run victory over a Chiv's XI which included dads, grandads and some of Hythe's up and coming stars. Luke Mills kept Chiv's side in the game with 64* which included 3x6's & 5x4's but it was Harry Smith 4-7 who bowled at the death to win it for the Under 17's
The Under 17's batted first after a gentlemens agreement between Chiv and Ben Smith. Harry Smith and Matt Young looked to get off to a similar start to their previous game against Bransgore - however they were tied down by accurate bowling from Punchey Mills and Pete Henley Smith with only 15 coming off the first 5 overs.
Mark Richards too bowled tightley and claimed the first wicket when Harry Smith was well caught by Sean Tongs for 8 - Under 17's 20 for 1 off 5.3 overs. Four balls later Zac Millar had Tom Richards caught by dad Mark for 1 - 26 for 2. By the 10th over the Under 17's had moved onto 36 for 2. Time to bring on the Juniors - and they didn't disappoint. Archie Gilber bowled his 2 overs for just 10 and Sam Kelly 2 overs for 12 including the wicket of Matt Young 38, when he was excellently caught low down by Tongs. 63 for 3 off 14.
That brought in skipper Ben Smith to join Jonjo but he somehow missed Chiv's first ball and out for a duck. Ali Bryers then bowled Luke Blackwell for 3 and with 2 overs to go the Under 17's were 90 for 5. Tom Huxley smashed two fours then was bowled by Chiv for 14 and also in the final over Jonjo after hitting Chiv for 4 was also bowled for a decent 25. Under 17's 103 for 7 surely too many for the opposition !!!
Chiv's hopes rested on a decent start from 'The Guru' but his hopes were dashed when Ben Smith bowled him 4th ball. Two wickets in two balls from Tom Richards then had Chiv's XI in all sorts of trouble at 9 for 3. First he bowled Barry Stovell for 1 and then bowled Zac Millar for 3. At 16 Richards got his third wicket - when Andy Woods called for a run but forgot to run - run out for 2. Luke Mills and Archie Gilbert started to restore things taking it to 34 before Archie was caught behingd off Sam Page for 7. Chiv's XI 34 for 5 off 10 and looking out of it. Enter the Punchey show as he slammed 25 off Sam Page's over including 3x6's and a four. Now 62 off 12 and the game evenly balanced again. Mills and Sam Kelly took the score upto 77 off 15 before Kelly was bowled by Ben Smith for 2. 8 off the next two overs as Punchey reached his fifty but wickets were tumbling at the other end as Harry took over the game.
First he had dad Pete caught by Lord for 4 and then Mark Richards bowled. 2 Overs left but in fading light Chiv's XI needed 13. Punchey slammed 10 off Todd Powells 19th over to leave just 3 needed off the last. A wide first ball (proudly given by the guru) but Harry then dazzled to leave 2 needed off 2 balls but he got a wicket with each. Both Pete Stannett and Ali Bryers stumped by Matt Young for 0 leaving Punchey starnded at the other end 64*.
Under 17's win by 1 run but a good game from both sides and especially the youngsters..
