Chalmers 72* Stars In Sway Draw As Hythe Held Up In The Rain

13 year old Kieran Chalmers followed his Under buddy Zac Millar as the Second youngest player to hit a senior fifty yesterday when he scored 72* against Sway in the Tony Woodhouse Trophy.

A 147 run partnership for the 3rd wicket with Sean Tongs 68 gave Hythe full batting points at 196 for 3. Sway in reply made 133 for 8 to hold onto a draw. A 17 Points win next month against Fawley will give the Green Caps the Trophy for the first time in four years.

On a wet day at Jones’ Lane, Hythe welcomed joint leaders Sway to the fourth game of the TW trophy knowing the next two performances could see the Green caps bring the cup back home. Hythe captain Russell Moore lost the toss and saw his side put into bat in a game that started in light rain that continued throughout the day.

Opening for Hythe were Jonjo Stovell and Harry Smith who began better than the previous meeting with Sway when on that occasion the Green caps were reduced to 24-5. This time round the first wicket fell with the score on 27 when Stovell was trapped lbw. Soon after Smith also departed when he was bowled around his legs but from then on it was Hythe dominance as Keiran Chalmers joined Sean Tongs at the crease.

The pair began slowly with Sway taking full advantage of the tricky wet conditions but as both batsmen stayed in they began to reassert their control. Once they had brought up the home side’s 100 they accelerated against a weary Sway attack and soon eclipsed both the 150 mark and the maximum batting points mark.

Chalmers brought up his maiden senior fifty first before Tongs followed suit soon after as Hythe dominated the visitors bowling. The partnership, worth 153 runs, was finally broken when Tongs was run out for 68 leaving Zac Millar one over with Keiran who ended on 72*.

In response to Hythe’s 196-3, Sway required a good start and after one opener retired hurt they managed to survive the first ten overs before Russell Moore struck with his first ball. Two overs later Harry Smith also picked up a wicket as Hythe pushed for the win with attacking field placings.

Unfortunately for the Green caps the rain kept falling and the ball became ever more slippery making it difficult to apply much pressure.

Zac Millar, Jonjo Stovell and Tom Richards all had a go before Keiran Chalmers again was the star as he picked up the key wicket of Sway’s top scorer, trapping him lbw. Chalmers then picked up a second wicket in his spell which gave Hythe renewed hope of forcing an outcome from the tricky conditions.

With the last eight overs on the clock skipper Moore turned to the spin of Sean Tongs and Ben Smith to try and force a result and it was Tongs who struck first when a high catch was well taken by Rich Last.

Tongs then struck again when he clean bowled Sway’s stand-out young batsman who had survived for most of the innings.

Unfortunately, time was running out for Hythe and despite Ben Smith clean bowling another Sway player and an extraordinary run out off the last ball Hythe fell short as the visitors finished on 133-8.

The result, however, leaves the Green caps in prime position to bring the trophy home and a good performance at Fawley in the next fixture could seal its return.
