An extraordinary first over from Ben Smith and a great fielding performance restricted the visitors to 76 which was then comfortably knocked off by the impressive Harry Smith.

Ben Smiths First Over

Despite the washout of the league games on Saturday the TW fixture survived the elements and was played under surprising sunshine.

Fawley, having beaten Sway in the other previous fixture, lost the toss and were inserted by Green caps captain Russell Moore.

Opening the bowling was Ben Smith who could not have wished for a better start. First ball he clean bowled Ian McElhenney before following that up with a wicket next ball as a full toss was caught by a diving Matt Young. The hat-trick ball was barely kept out before another two wickets in two balls sent Hythe into a frenzy with Fawley 0-4.

The pressure did not let up as change bowler Keiran Chalmers also dismissed two batsmen in consecutive balls. When Tom Richards then managed to repeat the feat Fawley found themselves eight down and in dire trouble, the only positive was that they had evaded four hat-trick balls.

Another wicket from Keiran Chalmers left the Oilers on the brink and after a tidy final wicket partnership the visitors were finally dismissed for a paltry 76.

In reply Hythe looked to Jonjo Stovell and Harry Smith for a positive start and this time around they managed to keep their wickets intact for longer. Jonjo Stovell in particular surviving a tricky period before giving his wicket away to a leg side full toss.

Todd Powell joined an aggressive Harry Smith at the crease and although Dean Head picked up a second wicket with Powell’s dismissal the pair had taken Hythe to within touching distance of the win.

Sure enough, with tea not arrived yet, Harry struck the winning run to finish on a fine 48* while Matt Young picked up an unbeaten couple.

This result now means the TW trophy is in the balance with one win for each the three teams. Hopefully, this year Hythe can bring home the prize by capitalising on this dominant performance.
