Victory Over Lymington To Finish The Season
A move to Noadswood for the final league game of the season looked unlikely to take place after foul weather over the weekend. The skies cleared on Sunday morning and skipper Ali Bryers lost the toss, being put in to bat. A long boundary meant that fours were hard to come by on the damp surface. Gilbert and Bryers once again opened the batting, Gilbert striking one boundary but plenty of good running for singles kept the scoreboard ticking over. Reid and Keates continued this good running, Reid maintaining his excellent recent form pulling beautifully for four as the bowlers overpitched regularly. Fenton and Bennett then came in and again nudged singles to all areas before Matt Bennett was unlucky to be caught off a wideish ball. All four pairs added twenty plus runs to the total, late season consistency that comes from playing regularly. Sam Kelly and Tom Copley came to the crease looking to accelerate the total towards 300. Strong hitting by both boys was backed up by plenty of cheeky singles, one too many as Tom Copley was unluckily run out. Sam was understandably disappointed to be out clean bowled after his excellent recent form with the bat. A score of 282 for 3 looked good enough and the boys showed great maturity in the way they bowled and fielded in defending the total.
Archie Gilbert made the perfect start with a wicket (clean bowled) off the first ball of the Lymington innings, Sam following this up with a maiden. Ben Fenton came on in the fifth over and clean bowled the new batsman. Tidy overs from Bennett, Reid, Keates and Bryers meant that Lymington needed 44 off the last four overs. Wickets for Ali Bryers (10th over) and Neal Reid (13th) kept up the pressure, and solid fielding (and backing up) ensured a fourth victory in five matches. Gilbert and Bryers deserving of particular praise for the way they bowled the last couple of overs. An excellent all-round performance showed the confidence that has grown in recent matches. League position still to be confirmed, but three consecutive wins should have us shooting up the table.
