Hythe Go Out In The Cup Quarter Finals

Archie GILBERT 26*

Farley won the toss and elected to bat on a hot summer’s evening at Jones Lane. They had a very strong batting line-up with boundaries being dispatched to all areas of the ground. Ali Bryers continued his recent good form with an early wicket (yet another clean bowled). Ben Fenton then secured another wicket with an excellent low catch being taken by Freddie Molyneux fielding close in. After this the fielding deteriorated with a number of careless errors being made. A late wicket by Sam Kelly (clean bowled) slowed down the run rate slightly but a daunting total of 124 for 3 had been set.

Coach Fenton issued his first rollocking of the season, disappointed that we had conceded 30 runs more than we should. The boys responded with an excellent batting display. Kelly and Gilbert had put on 33 without loss after 5 overs, both boys striking some excellent boundaries in every direction. An unlikely victory now seemed possible, but then wickets started to fall regularly. Farley brought on their mystery leggie Sam Arnold who bamboozled a number of the batsmen, Bryers very bemused by his stumping. Many in the galleries felt that umpire Sean Tongs was harsh in his decision making. Arnold finished with 4 – 2 – 8 – 4, impressive figures that turned the game decisively in Farley’s direction.

One batting performance of note was Archie Gilbert top scoring with 26 not out, anchoring the innings superbly and defying the bowlers for over ten overs. Matt Bennett also batted for a long time patiently waiting for the bad balls in his 7, finally being run out in the last over. Freddie Molyneux also scored his first boundary, a fine sweep shot that split the fielders.

It was a great opportunity to learn lessons for a busy week ahead, a friendly against Beaulieu on Thursday with a winnable league fixture against Pylewell Park on Sunday. Coach Fenton pleased with the batting response after the earlier careless fielding.
