Nail Biter @ Loperwood As Under 17's Tie

Thanks to Kev McCarthy for umpiring whilst I was away on cricket tour - and what a match to miss as Hythe and Calmore played out a tie. In an ideal world it was a game that the green caps was expected to win - but without several key players it was a decent effort.

Calmore looking for their first win of the season - batted first and after taking 12 off Ben Smiths first over - they were soon in trouble as Todd Powell had Edwards caught for 3 in the second over. Powell then bowled struck again in his next over and after 3 overs the home side were 20 for 2. Golding 11, G.Kinchington 21 and C.Kinchington 19* made sure the home side got over the 100 mark. Luke Blackwell was the best of the Hythe bowlers taking 3 for 20 off his 4 overs. Harry Smith took 2-25 and Todd Powell 2-13 as Calmore ended their innings on 105 for 8. Sam Page picked up two catches whilst Sam Mead and Ben Smith got the others.

Hythe needed a good start from the Smith brothers but Ben was caught in only the second over for 4. Harry and Jonjo Stovell took the score to 59 before Stovell was caught for 9. Sam Mead hit three cracking fours in his 13, whilst Harry Smith top scored with 28. There were useful contributions from Luke Blackwell 10 and Sam Page 11 but wickets continued to fall leaving the green caps needing 1 to win off the final ball with the last pair at the crease.

So a tie which with one game to go should keep Hythe out of the bottom two places - a decent effort considering the age of most of our players.
