Friday 3rd July
HYTHE XI vs LONGWICK (Bucks)
GROBLER TON SEALS HYTHE WIN
 |
| Nardus GROBLER |
| 112* inc 14 fours & 3 sixes |
The Friday before tour saw a Hythe XI welcome back Longwick Sports Club to Jones Lane as part of their New Forst Tour. The visitors had already played a Welsh touring side and Hambledon but the Green Caps wanted revenge for a Twenty 20 defeat a few years back. Hythe surprisingly fielded a strongish side for the fixture and were boosted by a ton from Nardus Grobler.
Matt Howe skippered the Hythe side and a traditional gentlemans agreement meant the visitors batted first in a timed game. Hythe welcomed back Pistol Pete Stevens, Kev McCarthy and 'Magnum' Mike Graham for their first dtarts for a long time and it was Pistol Pete who got Hythe off to a good start - bolwing J.Fuller for 5.
Longwick then added 82 for the 2nd wicket beofre Matt Howe had J.Morton caught for 47. A.Morton went soon after caught off the bowling of Kev McCarthy for 48. T.Warren hit 4 fours in his 28 but the rest of the iddle order struggled as Hythe took wickets through Matt Howe 2 and Sean Tongs 3 ( oh yes )
A quick fire 21* from K.Frewin took the score to 189 for 8 as Hythe bowled 48 overs in the 2 and a half hours before tea. The Guru finished with 3-20 off 3 and Matt Howe 3-33 off 3. Fonzy's (Richard Last) 6 overs went for just 13 runs.
The Green Caps opened with Magnum and Nardus and the pair put on 35 before Mike Graham was run out for 10. Whose fault - don't know !!! Matt Stark then went for 2 and Hythe were 39 for 2. This brought young Zac Millar to the crease still smarting from his maiden fifty at the weekend and 'the absence of leave' he received from his PE Teacher. Hythe's little and large preceeded to add 54 for the 3rd wicket before Millar was out for 23 bowled by Edwards. Groblers fifty came up including 10 fours and though Hythe then lost Porter 1 and Last 10 when Tongs came to the crease at 99 for 5 Hythe still needed 91 to win off 128 overs.
Grobler continued to dominate though scoring 4x4's and 3x6's in his second fity to bring up his ton. He finished on 112 not out and Tongs 25 not out as Hythe got home with 5 wickets to spare and 4 overs.
A good game played in very good spirit and we thank the Longwick lads for making it a good afternoons cricket - though I do aplogize for running out of barbeque on such a pleasant evening
