Sway Bowlers On Top As Hythe's Batting Disintergrates

Hythe 2nd XI were well beaten on Saturday as their batting disintergrated against promotion candidates Sway and one of the best bowling attacks in the league. Sway batted first and made 203 for 9 - Hythe were shot out for just 108

Hythe won the toss and on a damp pitch decided to bowl first. Rich Bunce and Rich Last opened the bowling but despite being economical and finding some movement, the hoped for early breakthrough did not happen.

Ian Prentice replaced Last and with his first ball induced an edge which produced the moment of the day when a diving Tony Wood clung on to a spectacular catch. When Pete Stevens took over from the frugal Bunce he too took a wicket in his first over as Ewan Bell held on to a difficult low catch on the boundary. At this point Sway were 63 for 2 from 19 overs and the game was evenly balanced. Rodway (72) and Atapattu (35) then forged the decisive partnership of 84 from 13 overs as Hythe toiled in the heat until Pete Stevens spotted Atapattu advancing down the wicket and sent a quicker wider delivery past the bat for an easy stumping. Sway were now 147 for 3 with ten overs to go.

All of the Hythe players however stuck to the task well, Lee Powell after struggling in his first two overs claimed two wickets, one caught behind and the other stumped. Rich Last bowled Rodway with an inswinging yorker and had two wickets in two balls in his final over both stumped giving Gary Howe his fifth victim of the innings. Along with a run out courtesy of Sean Tongs Sway finished on 203 for 9 from their 42 overs.

In reply all of the Hythe batsmen struggled to come to terms with the uneven bounce and the quality of the Sway bowling. Tom Porter was trapped LBW on the full by an excellent inswinging delivery in the 2nd over which started the slow demise, with only Sean Tongs (36), Luke Mills (11) and Gary Howe (20) reaching double figures. Hythe were finally dismissed for 108, but did pick up 7 points from a game in which they were out played by a good Sway team.
