Winning streak brought to an end after a disappointing trip to Milford

A below-par display from the Green caps saw them lose their unbeaten run away to Milford on Sea as all three disciplines; batting, bowling and fielding failed to live up to their previous expectations.

Hythe captain Mike Bowman won the toss and elected to field on a dodgy looking Milford pitch. Opening for Hythe were Russell Moore and Richard Bunce and Moore’s positive start resulted in the first wicket when Lee Powell took a high catch. Unfortunately for the Green caps it was downhill from there as Bunce was replaced after only four overs and Powell’s bowling was guided to the boundary on numerous occasions.

It was not until the experience of Pete Stevens and Wayne Effeny were brought on that Hythe came back into the game. Stevens bowled extremely well and picked up the wicket of the dangerous Will Thorpe while Effeny strangled the Milford batsmen with great accuracy.

Hythe began to pick up wickets including the run out of the opener Langford for 47 but in his place Boynton took the attack to the Green caps attack and his 73 took Milford to a total of 215-8. Wayne Effeny finished well for figures of 4-40 but late on the extra runs and dropped catches earlier cost Hythe dear.

In reply, Hythe needed a good start but as early as the third over they were in deep trouble as both Sean Tongs and Wayne Effeny departed for ducks. Mike Bowman and Ewan Bell then prevented a repeat of the collapse at Bournemouth earlier in the season as they shared a 54 run partnership with Bell top scoring.

Useful innings were played by Luke Mills , Gary Howe and Richard Bunce but Hythe were falling well below the target and a 37 partnership between Bunce and Russell Moore ultimately only resulted in a couple of extra batting points as the Green caps finished all out for 152.

Hythe will have to put the poor performance behind them for the tricky trip to Sway next week and hope to begin another winning streak.
