Green Caps Record First Ever Twenty20 Win Over Fawley

Hythe beat Fawley last night in the first of their annual Twenty20 head to heads by 39 runs.

It was the first time the Green Caps had beaten their County 1 neighbours at the shortened game and despite the oilers having rested several of the usual first teamers - Mike Bowmans men will still be pleased with a deserved victory.

Fawley skipper Andy McIllheney was the toss and surprisingly elected to field first on a pleasantly warm evening.

Hythe opened with Robbie James and Sean Tongs with 7 coming off the first over. But after hitting a four in the next Robbie James was caught off the bowling of Coots 10. Richie Froggett joined Tongs and the pair raced to 30 for 1 after just 4 overs. Dean Godden slowed up the run rate with his first two overs going for just 6. Froggett then took his score to 31 before being second out bowled by Kev McCarthy. Froggetts innings included 2 fours and a six.

With the time now to increase the run rate Hythe lost batsman at regular intervals. Kev James was bowled by Streather for 7 and Matty Howe was run out for 0. The Guru though, was once again impressing the galleries slamming 9 fours and a six in a good innings of 61. Punchey Mills hit 3 fours in a quick fire 16 not out at the end and Hythe finished on 174 for 5 off their 20 overs. The Hythe innings helped by 3 five run wides.

Fawleys response (much easier to read from the scorebook thanks to the Chairman) couldn't have got off to a worse start as A.Cole was caught by Tongs off the bowling of Richie Froggett for 0 in just the second over. Young Streather and Steve Cox then added 21 before Cox was caught by Chalky White again off the bowling of peg leg Froggett. Streather soon followed caught behind by Kev James off Matty Howe for 10.

That brought together Fawleys main hope in their First team and Second Team Captains Dave Streather and Jason Ford. Streather inparticular looked dangerous as he emptied the box of spare balls one by one into the hedges around the ground including 2 sixes and a four off Rob Saunders first over. The pair put on 84 in 8 overs before Streather was finally out for 58 to a smart piece of wicket keeping by Kev James off Saunders. Streathers innings included 3 fours and 6 sixes.

Fawley now needed 62 off 5 overs which became harder as Dean Goddon fell first ball caught by Froggett off Saunders. Fawley 112 for 5. A few overs later and Fords innings came to a close well caught in the deep by Matt Howe again off Rob Saunders whose figures were 3-40. Jon Weall returned to the attack to dismiss McIllhenney 5, Coots 0 and Fenner first ball leaving Kev McCarthy not out for 3 and Fawley all out for 135. Weall finishing with 3-16 off 4.

A good game played in great spirit Hythe had won by 39 runs though i'm sure it will be a much different side that faces the Green Caps come the end of July up at their place.
