HYTHE SUNDAY XI vs SHIP SHOP

Sunday 7th June

Hythe cruise to victory over Ship Shop

A solid bowling performance from the Green Caps saw them skittle out the normally strong visitors out for just 86 with Harry Smith and James Page both taking three wickets. The runs were then comfortably knocked off for the loss of four wickets.

In overcast skies Hythe welcomed Ship Shop to Jones’ Lane in search for another friendly victory. Skipper James Page won the toss and inserted the opposition as the drizzle began to fall over the ground.

Opening the bowling was Russell Moore and Tom Barge who probed the opposition attack and after a dropped catch off each bowler, Moore struck with the first wicket when the opening bat edged behind to Matt Young.

Moore was then replaced by Ian Prentice and Barge by James Page as Hythe took control of matters. An excellent spell of bowling from Prentice saw him pick up two wickets with some quick and accurate deliveries. Page at the other end drew the batsmen into playing false shots and big heaves were met by big catches from Bell and Tongs as the Green caps dominated from the off. Page also picked up a debatable LBW but finished his spell with an impressive 3-21. Harry Smith then joined the attack and rediscovered his form to prove his all-rounder status with some excellent leg spin bowling resulting in figures of 3-3 as the tail was wrapped up and the innings finished on 86.

In reply Matt Howe began confidently alongside Steve Weall but he was undone by a superb delivery from Wilkinson who was the pick of the Ship Shop attack with 8-3-12-1. Steve was then joined by Luke Mills before the former was given out LBW to bring Ewan Bell to the crease.

In a repeat of yesterday’s century partnership Mills and Bell took Hythe close to the target before firstly Mills was caught and then Bell bowled after a horrible cross-batted swipe.

This left Matt Young (12*) and Sean Tongs (2*) to knock off the runs as a simple victory was assured with over 17 overs still remaining.

Great to see the Portmouth based side at Jones Lane for their annual fixture - They're one side you know that however hard they struggle to get out a side - they won't let you down.
