Under 13's Back On The Winning Trail

Kieran CHALMERS 32*

Hythe Under 13's got back to winning ways after last week’s close defeat to Totton & Eling, with a 24 run victory over Lymington B at Jones Lane

After yet another toss win, Kieran again elected to bat on a quick pitch. Richard Jones fell to the first ball – not the start required and 2 overs later Hythe were 8 for 2, Zac Millar run out for 6 attempting to push the second run, but was sent back only to see the bails removed after a good throw from the boundary. Mark Reid entered, smashed a 4 and was then bowled, enter Nathan Froggett to steady the ship.

A 22 run partnership got the score ticking but Nathan was clean bowled by Drodge for 6. Jack Knight Owen batted sensibly and straight and rotated the strike brilliantly to allow Kieran to push on and retire for the 4th time this season. Ten overs gone – Hythe 54 for 4. Jack kept the score ticking and picked up the extras when applicable. Jack finished on 13 runs including one 4 – the rest, strike rotating singles (a top effort). Josh Mead came in at 9 and hit bad balls for 4 and finished on 15. Toby Smith held up his end and ran when needed to provide support to the senior batsmen and the Hythe total finished on 93 – not a bad effort after the start.

After a quick pep talk from the coach’s Josh & Kieran again opened the bowling and soon found the Hythe pitch to their liking, offering pace, bounce and seam movement. Four overs later the score was 12 for 0, the pressure building – Elliott Carley was first change coming down the hill and bowling with good pace had the opener J Holland caught by Kieran at short extra cover, pressure still rising, Richard Jones bowled 4 overs for 8 runs at the other end and in Elliott’s next over he struck twice in 2 balls, clean bowling McQuoid and G Edwards.

Twelve overs gone – 34 on the board and the game was going away from Lymington. The bowling was tight, the fielding sharp, James Bidwell 1 over, 0 for 3 runs; Sam Kelly 1 over, 0 for 4 runs. 14 overs – 42 runs.Kieran and Josh returned to finish off the game, Josh finally gettinhg the last wicket to finish with 1 – 21 off 4 overs. Kieran 0 for 10 off 4 overs. The Lymington innings closed on 69 but never really threatened the Hythe total, it was a fantastic bowling and fielding effort to restrict the runs to set up the win.
