Under 11's Through To Quarter-Finals
After a frustrating few weeks of inactivity, the under 11's played their second match in two days against a Winterslow side who had travelled down from Salisbury with just eight players for a cup match. Archie Gilbert lost the toss and we were put in to bat. Kelly and Gilbert made a fantastic start with some excellent running between the wickets before Kelly was bowled for a quickfire 9.
This sparked a worrying middle order collapse with wickets falling at regular intervals. Brandon Keates coming in at number 8 steadied the ship, batting sensibly for his well deserved 4. However the star of the innings was Gilbert who was finally 8th man out having scored an excellent 15, batting for almost 15 overs. Sharpe and Knight-Owen then scored their first runs on debut and ensured that we batted out our 18 overs. The question was whether 46 runs was a big enough total.
After a short break Hythe set about defending their total with wickets falling at regular intervals and excellent fielding preventing the scoring of any quick singles. Winterslow were 7 for 4 after 7 overs and victory was sealed by 17 runs when they were bowled out for 30. Gilbert again starred with figures of 3 for 2 (all clean bowled) from his three overs, ably backed up by Bryers (2 for 14) and Bennett (1 for 4). Ladbury wrapped up victory with a debut wicket thanks to an excellent catch by Mould. A thoroughly pleasing win with all boys contributing, Copley behind the stumps deserving of a mention conceding no byes and keeping brilliantly. Well done to everyone, but keep practising the forward defensive strokes in the back garden! Quarter final against Farley in the next two weeks.
