Hythe Under 13s Lose First Game @ Totton But Remain In 4th Place..
Hythe Under 13's unbeaten record went last Thursday as they were beaten by 5 Wickets at the hands of Totton & Eling despite a great effort from Hythe Skipper Kieran Chalmers who scored 38* and took 2 for 12 off 4 overs. Hythe still find themselves in 4th place in the South Division.
The Under 13s played at the re-arranged venue of Calmore Recreation Ground - on a small pitch - and won the toss again, electing to bat. Six overs down and 22 for 4 and the decision looked like a bad one, Richard Jones going for a duck, Zac Millar for 1, Josh Mead for a duck and Jack Knight-Owen for the same.
Kieran played a Captains innings and kept the runs ticking and, when joined by Mark Reid, found an ally as the runs flowed, Mark hitting 17 off of 15 balls including 3 fours. Kieran retired (again) at 30 and, with the tail wagging, James Bidwell - 4, Alex Nicholas - 3, Sam Long - 6, the score pushed on to 83 from 17 overs. With Hythe bowled out, Kieran returned to the crease in the last over to score a further 8 runs and the Hythe innings ended on 95 off 18 overs. Pick of the Totton bowlers - J Drake - 3 wickets for 6 runs off of 3 overs.
After the turnaround - Hythe old boy Jason Shorto opened the batting but, after 3 overs, he and his fellow opener were back in the pavilion. James Bidwell, bowling over number 2, removing B Pinkney for 6; Josh Mead removing Shorto - again for 6 runs, caught & bowled. Kieran & Josh tightened things up and at the halfway point were 48 for 3 and on course for the win, their innings held together by J Drake - who finished on 29 runs and J Ayers on 17, both removed by Chalmers returning late on to finish his 4 overs - 2 for 12 runs. It set up an outside chance to win the game for Hythe but Totton and Eling got home with a couple of overs to spare.
The first loss of the season for the green caps but it was a close game which could have gone either way. Lymington B are up next - lets hope the return to winning ways is not too distant .
