HYTHE SUNDAY XI vs GOSPORT BOROUGH

Sunday 31st May

A WIN TO BE PROUD OF BY THE SUNDAY XI OVER SOUTHERN LEAGUE CLUBSIDE GOSPORT BOROUGH

Hythe welcomed Southern League Club Gosport Borough to Jones Lane on Sunday in what is always one of the most competitive fixtures of the seasons and Sunday didn't disappoint.

Gosport kept to their word and included a youthful side but also included Aussie Lloyd Moore in their side who currently tops the Southern Premier league Divison 3 averages with 367 runs from 3 innings at an average of 120.67. But then in the Southern League he doesn't face bowling like Tom Barge. Beamers, wides and then the prize wicket of Moore for 4 all in his first over.

Barge's opening partner was Rich Bunce who bowled a tidy 5 overs for 13 runs before winging about his little pixy (finger). Think the real reason was from then on Hythe had no luck as both Hawes and Butcher put together a big partnership. All the bowlers bowled well with young Sam Page 5 overs for 24 the pick of the bowlers. Lazy git off the field and shoots off staright after the game, but on it has really impressed this season ands coming on well. It was in the 35^th over when Hythe got their second breakthrough when the returning Barge (in front of mum and dad) had Hawes well caught for 86 by Harry Smith.

Gosport finished on 215 for 2 with Butcher 80* and Taylor 1*, a very gettable target on the Hythe wicket.

Hythe opened up with Robbie James and Steve Weall and got off to a blistering start with 71 coming off the first 10 overs. It was at this point that Hythe lost Weall for 30 when he dragged on off the bowling of Taylor. Hythe then had a mini collapse as Page was given out LBW for 0 (second duck of the weekend) and Matt Young was bowled first ball of the bowling of Wilkinson. Matt Howe then joined James and the pair took the score to 106 before James was bowled by Wilkinson for 42. Wilkinson finished with figures of 6 overs 3 for 47.

Tongs then joined Howe and once again the runs flowed as the pair put on 110* in 11 overs with Howe finishing 55* and Tongs 54* both completing their 2^nd 50 for the weekend and winning the game with 4 overs to spare.

Well done to both sides in hot conditions and thanks once again to Gosport for travelling across to play. Great to see the Hythe lads, off their own back, congratulate Butcher at the end of the innings for 80*. Changing wicket-keepers twice not so sporting - 37 overs in 2 and a half hours short of the mark..
