| Tom PORTER 76 | Sean TONGS 83 |
| 1st Wicket Partnership - 143 | |
On a very hot day at Jones’ Lane, Green caps skipper Mike Bowman won the toss and elected to bat, much to the satisfaction of the majority of the Hythe players.
The game quickly fell into Hythe control as in the first over opener Sean Tongs was dropped was dropped at slip in what can only be described as a dolly before the follow-up chance, which was even easier, was also grounded. While still on 0 the ‘guru’ was dropped again at first slip and everyone knew that it would prove costly. After that Tongs, and partner Tom Porter, starting taking the Alderholt attack to pieces as short bowling was punished to all parts of the boundary.
Tongs was finally dismissed for 83 with the partnership worth 143 as Wayne Effeny joined Tom Porter at the crease. The pair put on 55 in five overs as a quick onslaught by Effeny, only ended by a fine catch under the trees, brought three sixes in his innings. When Effeny was dismissed a typical Hythe collapse began with Porter, Bowman and Gary Howe all losing their wickets as the Green caps fell from 198-1 to 204-5. Before long Pete Stevens was also back in the pavilion but late hitting from Ewan Bell and Ian Prentice saw Hythe close on an impressive 272-7.
Alderholt, in reply, required a good start but found themselves up against the in-form Russell Moore who picked up the first three wickets in his spell as the visitors were quickly reduced to 39-3. When Lee Powell picked up the fourth wicket with an excellent run out the game was all but over and Hythe began to relax. This allowed Alderholt to pick up cheap runs with Powell in particular being targeted during his spell.
The Green caps finally ensured their victory with late wickets as Powell, White (2) and Effeny (2) took the visitors to the brink of being dismissed, but Alderholt held on. S.Willoughby (46) and A.Ranger (53) ensured they reached the 200 target as they finished on 202-9 which meant that it was a comfortable 70 run win for the Green caps.
