| Richard JONES 31* | Kieran CHALMERS 32* & 3-10 |
Hythe Under 13’s breezed into the next round of the New Forest Cup with a comfortable win over OT’s & Romsey.
Hythe dominated in all areas, batting, bowling and fielding which culminated in the best all round performance by an Under 13 side in years.
Hythe skipper Kieran Chalmers won the toss and elected to bat on a bright but cold evening. Richard Jones and Zac Millar opened the batting but with the score only on 2 Zac was clean bowled by Cook for a duck. The skipper batting 3 steadied the ship and both Chalmers and Jones pushed the total forward with some good running and good strokeplay.
Richard retired first on 31 runs bringing Nathan Froggett to the crease who fed the strike to Kieran enabling him to retire on 32. Jack Knight Owen & Nathan continued to push; running quick singles & pressuring the Romsey fielders into errors. Finally Jack was run out with one ball left. The final score finishing on 95 for 2 off 17 overs- pick of the Romsey bowlers was Cook with 3 overs, 11 runs and 1 wicket.
NB OT’s lost a player during the Hythe innings as he was struck on the head by the ball whilst attempting to get Jones ‘caught & bowled’. As a precaution he was taken to hospital with a large egg on his head- we all hope he is OK and will be playing again soon.
The Romsey innings started quickly with Kierans first over going for 7 including a 4 through slip off the edge down to third man. Josh Mead was as steady as ever and broke through in his first over – removing the opening batsman Newman clean bowled. The next 4 overs went for just 5 runs – 6 overs down and it was 15 for 2. Elliott Carley snapping up a catch at extra cover to remove C Cook:- both openers back in the pavilion. Sam Long continued where he left off last week with a 4 over bowling stint which finished with 2 wickets for 11 runs.
Elliott finished with 2 wickets for 8 runs off 2 overs. 13 overs down and the score was pinned back to 49 for 5, wickets tumbling at the right time stopping any momentum from Romsey including a stunning catch from Richard Jones at cover. Kieran and Josh returned to take the last overs and Josh took his 2nd wicket, Kieran got 2 more including a Zac Millar catch behind the stumps. Final score 68 for 8 off 17. Hythe won by 27 runs.
A really good team performance in the field played in good spirit with lots of encouragement for the bowlers. Like I said – probably one of the best performances I’ve seen.
