Sean Tongs and James Page’s century partnership sees the Green caps home after Russell Moore’s maiden five wicket haul puts Hythe in control.

Hythe welcomed Sarisbury Athletic to Jones’ Lane for the first home fixture for the Green caps this season and put on a display in front of the home crowd.

Sarisbury won the toss and elected to bat which allowed Jon Weall and Mike Edwards to open the bowling for Hythe. The pair began well with both finding the edge of the bat but time after time the ball either found the vacant gap or dropped to the floor.

After a period of time Mike Edwards finally got the breakthrough he deserved as he took the opening wicket following a superb catch by Sean Tongs in the deep. Weall was then replaced by Lee Powell for his first bowl this season while Edwards bowled through for figures of 8-1-19-1.

Replacing Mike was Russell Moore who took two wickets in three balls in his second over when Edwards took an equally superb catch off the second delivery before Moore cleaned up the next batsmen. The next wicket to fall was the opener Bilson who was bowled by Steve Weall for 42 after Steve had taken some punishment at the hands of top batsmen Day.

hen in four overs the innings was suddenly over. Firstly Matt Howe came on and had danger man Day caught behind by Young for 29 before Moore picked up his third wicket of the match next over with another clean bowled delivery. The eighth wicket fell when Bell took a catch off Howe’s bowling and the final two fell in the very next over when Moore cleaned up another two batsmen to finish with fine figures of 8-2-28-5.

Sarisbury were all out for 125 off 32 overs which gave the Green caps enough time to squeeze in a couple of overs before tea - something Matt Stark would later regret as he departed for a duck in the first over to mean Hythe had tea on 6-1.

Matt’s opening partner Ewan Bell was joined by Sean Tongs but the former quickly departed for 6 which left Hythe on 18-2 after a fiery opening spell by Nicholls who claimed 8-2-17-2.

After that though the waterside team hardly looked troubled as Tongs was joined at the crease by Captain James Page and the two comfortably saw the team to drinks by sharing a fifty partnership.

The pair comfortably scored runs against a lacklustre Sarisbury attack which provided Tongs with perfect timing to get into form just a week before the league season begins. As the game drew to a close Tongs reached his half-century and, combined with Page, shared an unbeaten 108* partnership as Hythe strolled home on 126-2 with Tongs 58* and Page 36*.
