Hythe XI - Hungerford '08

Hampshire County Division 2

Hungerford vs Hythe & Dibden 1st XI

23rd August Played @ Hungerford C.C

Geordie Gets His Birthday Wish

The Hungerford Chairman celebrated his 50th birthday with an all day party at the club hoping that his team would win and keep their County 2 status. His boys delivered as a weakened Hythe team struggled to defend 167 with aussie M.Mangan 76* always in control of the game.

Plusses for Hythe - again the peformance of youngsters Page and Mills in the field. Richard Last (25) again showed form with the bat and Ewan Bell (31) finally showed some form.

Hythe won the toss and elected to bat first to the surprise of the Hungerford umpire who said the pitch always get easier throughout the day. Hythe got off to the worse possible start when Dixon was caught behind in the third over for 0. Simon Wright and Robbie James then put on a partnership of 61 for the second wicket before James was out caught of a very wide delivery for 28. Two more key wickets quickly followed as Wright was caught for 30 inc 1 towering six , and Kendrick was bowled by Wooldridge for 4. Hythe 67 for 4 off 16.

James Page soon followed for a duck but the innings got back on track through Ewan Bell and Richard Last who put on 40 for the 6th wicket before Last was bowled by Burbidge for 25 (4x4's). Luke Mills went for 6 and then Bell followed for a decent 31 (6x4's). Hythe 131 for 7 off 31. The name of the game was to bat out the overs and to get to 150 which Jon Weall (23) achieved hitting 2x4's and a six in the process. Weall last man out leaving our Chairman stranded on 4 not out - Hythe all out for 167

Hungerfords response got off to a similar start as Weall had Panting caught by Page for 0. Hythe had to wait till the 16th over to claim a second wicket when Mills bowled P.Westbrook for 16. Hungerford 38 for 2. Mills then claimed a second wicket having M.Westbrook well caught by Harry Smith for 2. 56 for 3.

Australian M.Mangan and C.Thorp then took the game away from Hythe with a 72 run 4th wicket stand. Thorp hitting 49 including 9x4's before he was brilliantly caught by Mills in the gully off Last. Mangan (78* - 7x4's & 2x6s) and skipper D.Bull (13*) saw the home side home to a 6 wicket win much to the delight of the Chairman. One consulation for Hythe - free drinks and barbeque afterwards.
