HYTHE BATTING COLLAPSE IN 10 RUN DEFEAT

Skipper Mike Bowman must be tearing is hair out after his side chasing 162 to win collapsed from 99-0 to 151 all out and a 10 run defeat. Bowman made 56 and Sean Tongs 39 (obviously the only two to eat the marmite sandwiches at tea time). Earlier Lee Powell produced an impressive spell of bowling 2-10 off 6 overs staking a claim that he needs to bowl earlier to be able to come back for a second spell.

Both teams entered this game with only ten men following late withdrawals and so under darkening skies Hythe were forced to open the bowling with Steve Miller returning from an injury lay off and Chalky White. Both bowled economically but without much luck as BAE made a steady start.

It was not until the 21st over with the score on 71 that the breakthrough was made by the very impressive Lee Powell who followed up with the second wicket a few overs later. The run rate slowly increased but wickets were still hard to come by until the last ten overs when spin twins Pete Stevens snr. and Chalky White managed five between them and aided by a first wicket of the season for Mike Bowman and a run out, BAE were all out for 161 runs in the 42nd over. There were catches for S Miller (3), P Stevens and S Tongs, a run out by S.Tongs and a stumping by G Howe. Powell and Stevens each clean bowling one victim.

The Hythe reply started very well with Mike Bowman (56) and Sean Tongs (39) sharing an opening partnership of 99 from 25 overs before Tongs was dismissed. Wickets then began to fall at regular intervals with only Matt Young batting with great maturity making double figures. As the light deteriorated making batting more difficult and the experienced bowling attack kept their nerve, Hythe were finally dismissed for 151 in the 42nd over giving BAE the victory by 10 runs.

This was a game played in good spirit with the performances of particularly Lee Powell and Matt Young producing praise from the BAE players. The other notable event being the presence of Marmite sandwiches at tea, which caused much ridicule for the poor unfortunate who made them from his own team mates.
