HYTHE XI vs NEW XI (Herts)

Thursday 14th August

@ Jones Lane, Hythe

When Guru Met Guru

Another tour game defeat as New XI from Hertforshire overcame a disappointing Hythe batting performance. Thats five defeats in five games this year against touring sides with two to play - an unusual statistic for the Green Caps.

New XI batted first and from 74 for 7 balloned to 170 all out. Chalky White took best figures 3-25. Hythe lost Richard Last in the first over and never got going. Only Sean Tongs (47) and Ben Smith (19) performed with the bat as Hythe were bowled out for 127 and a 43 run defeat .

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In a 35 over game the tourists, playing in their first and final tour match after having the other two at Hinton and Falwey called off, won the toss and elected to bat first in surprisingly warm sunshine.

Hythe opened up with Richard Last and Pete Stevens and claimed an early breakthrough when L.Patel was caught by Matt Young for 11, At 22 they lost a second wicket Matt Howe running out K.Patel (11). Pete Stevens got in on the act when he bowled Holi for 0 - New XI 22-3. At 53 in the 10th over Harry Smith ran out Jusari and the vistors were in trouble.

Last then claimed Patel Khan well caught by James Page and when Ben Smith bowled L.Patel for 7 and with the visitors 74 for 7 Chiv was scampering to get the teas ready.M.Patel had other ideas though he smashed his way to 63 taking a keen liking to Michael Grahams bowling 0-29 off 3 and Chalky White 3-25 off 4.4, But as usual Chalks had the last laugh taking the last three wickets. New XI 170 all out

Hythe needed a good start and opened with Tony North and Richard Last who needed to get away. Unfortunately 'The Fonz' didn't explain how quick he needed to get away and was caught in the first over for 0. Hythe progressed to 24 off 5 before James Page was harshly judged caught behind for 7. Matt Young (1) didn't last much longer unfortunately hitting a pie to mid wicket. The pie chucker Laurie then commenced to get out two more wickets much to the surprise of the Indians. He snapped up Matt Howe caught for 8 and then Northy leg before for 10. - Hythe a woeful 40 for 5.

Things didn't get much better as Hong Kong (Mike) Fouey was bowled by Murali for 2 46-6.

Sean Tongs and Ben Smith then put on the only significant stand of the innings of 60 before Smith was run out for 19 in the 28th over. The cautious Tongs then fell for 47 and thre rest quickly followed - Hythe all out for a disappointing 127. So into the bar where our 'Guru shared stories with New XI's Chairman (also known as The Guru) as the visitors stayed for a few drinks before heading back to their caravans. Atleast they got one game in on their first tour to the New Forest
