Tourists Late Charge Too Much For Hythe
On a hot afternoon a Hythe XI entertained Lincolnshire side Messingham in a 40 over game as part of their 3 match tour to the New Forest. Looking worse for wear at the half way stage the tourists had only made 92 runs but recovered enough to give the Hythe bowlers a real hard time in the last 20 overs to score 246 for 6. an opening stand of 66 between Sean Tongs and young Harry Smith was the best it got for Hythe as they finished on 163 for 9 in reply.
A Captains agreement and the tourists batted first on a belter of a track. With several of the Messingham lads still recovering from a night out in Bournemouth Hythe took advantage through Russell Moore to dismiss both the opening pair with only 7 on the board.
At 13 overs Ben Smith replaced Richard Last (0-21 off 6) and immeadiatley got a third Messingham wicket with the score on caught by Last. The impressive Moore (with the ball not catching) claimed his third wicket and the tourists were 59 for 4 off 16. Things were to quickly change though as C.Lormar and A.Cook set about the Hythe bowlers - Lormar scoring 77 which included 12 fours and 1 six. Finally he was well caught by Last on the boundary with the score on 145, but Cook continued the punishment particularly to Gareth Mead (1-47 off 6) and Matt Howe (0-52 off 6).
Cook finally went - caught by Rob James off Matt Young for 66 (8 fours and 2 sixes) but a late flurry from B.Brumby 26* and T.Robinson 32* enabled I.B.M to get upto 246 for 6 off their 40 overs. A good effort after being 106 for 4 after 24 overs.
Sean Tongs opened the batting for Hythe with 14 year old Harry Smith ( only because the skipper fogot to bowl him) The pair put on 66 for the first wicket before Smith was caught for 25 in the 14 the over. Hythe then got bogged down for 7 overs with only 6 being added to the score and Hythe losing skipper Robbie James for a duck - game over. Wickets continued to tumble as Hythe lost the rusty Tony North (6). Sean Tongs reached another 50 before being the fourth wicket to fall for 66 at 111 for 4 off 28 overs. With only pride to play for now James Page (12) Matt Howe (20) and Gareth Mead (15) all got started before getting out. Richard Last and Ben Smith added their names to The Ducks League before Hythe closed on 183 for 9 and a 63 run defeat.
