New Forest South Division

26th June @ Hythe

Unbeaten New Milton March On

Hythe’s U13’s came across top of the table and unbeaten New Milton this week and after scoring 74 for 5 had the table toppers worried for a short time at 33 for 3. But strength in depth shone through and the league leaders won by 5 wickets. But a strong performance by the Green Caps especially Richard Jones who once again had to retire 30 not out. Zac Miller made 13 not out and with the ball Kieran Chalmers looked lively bowling 2-19 off 4 which against the majority of the sides in the league would have been 5-19.

On a cloudy evening at Jones Lane Hythe batted first against th e 7-0 leaders of the South Division New Milton. Richard Jones and Josh Mead again opened the batting and made a steady start scoring 12 off the first 3 overs. But in the fourth after turning down a run the following ball Josh Mead was bowled by Watts for 5. Kieran Chalmers came in at no 3 as Jones started to play his shots including a 6 off the bowling of Watts. Despite taking the score upto 30 the partnership was broken when Chalmers was caught off the bowling of Edwards for a duck - Hythe 30-2 off 6. Soon to become 33-3 when last weeks hero Marc Read was caught of Anderson for 1.

Chris Griffin joined Jones and soon smashed a four off Edwrads but his innings was short lived when at 48 for 4 off 10 he was caught and bowled by Anderson for 5. Soon after Richard Jones retired at 30 not out an innings which included 3 fours and a six. Nathan Froggett was caught off Yates for 0 but Zac Millar (13* and Tom Smith (6*) added an unbeaten 22 for the 6th wicket as Hythe finished on 74 for 5 off their 18 overs.

With spots of rain in the air and the clouds darkening Hythe took to the field looking for an early wicket. Kieran Chalmers zoomed in from the top end with Josh Mead coming uphill. 7 runs came off the first 2 overs and then in the third Chalmers cleaned bowled Yates for 1. A single came off Josh Meads next over but Chalmers third over was full of incident. Edwards smashed him for 2 fours and a 2 but with the last ball Chalmers had Anderson caught by Jones for 5. New Milton 21 for 2 off 5 overs.

Tom Smith replaced Mead (0-5) and with the very next ball had the dangerous Edwards caught by Froggett for 13 - 21 for 3. With a decent size crowd wandering if a shock could be on the cards Hythe bowlers then struggled for line and length once Chalmers had finished his impressive spell of 4 overs (2-19). New Miltons batsman R.Vallis and A.Hussey were always looked in control and took just 7 more overs to knock off the 54 runs needed.

A defeat for Hythe but a good performance against a very good New Milton side. With their Cup Quarter-Finals coming up soon against Bashley 'B' they can only benefit from playing in games like this.
