Ton Up Tongs Makes Gives Hythe 2nd XI Great Start In New Division

Hythe turned in a fine all round performance to beat Swan Green by 60 runs at Jones Lane yesterday.

Swan Green won the toss and elected to bowl first.

Sean Tongs and Tom Porter batted sensibly to build an excellent opening partnership of 80 runs from 23 overs before Tom Porter was adjudged LBW for 22. Wayne Effeny and Tongs then accelerated the scoring in a partnership worth 99 off 15 overs when Wayne was bowled for 54. Mike Edwards then played a sensible cameo innings of 16 during which time Hythe reached 200 to secure maximum batting points and Sean Tongs completed a chanceless century finishing on 105 not out giving a final total of 212 for 3 from 42 overs

Mike Edwards and Pete Stevens Jnr opened the bowling for Hythe and both bowled steadily on a pitch with little help for the seamers, Mike Edwards taking the first wicket with the score on 13. Swan Green then put together a good partnership of 65 keeping up with the required rate before Ian White made the breakthrough in the 19^th over.

Wickets then began to fall steadily as the pressure on Swan Green built to keep up with the run rate and Hythe’s ground fielding and accurate bowling gave little away forcing batsmen to go for the big shots with varied degrees of success. Wickets were shared between Edwards (1), Effeny (2), White (2), Stevens snr (2) and Woods (3). Catches were held by White (2) Effeny, Woods and Porter and there was a stumping by G Howe. Swan Green being all out for 152 from 38.1 overs giving Hythe victory by 60 runs and maximum 24 points
