MIDWEEK TOUR MATCH
HYTHE & DIBDEN XI vs SMARDEN (KENT)
Wednesday 15th August
Top Performance by Youthful Hythe Over Kent Tourists
Hythe cruised to a 77 run victory over the Kent Tourists who the previous day chased down 268 to win over Langley Manor. A youthful Hythe side in damp conditions were superb in the field and Skipper Gary Howe was always confident that 164 was enough for his young side to defend.
Remarkably the wind had done a good job on drying out the wicket enough to play after 24 hours of rain. Smarden surprisingly elected to bowl first on a damp pitch that became wetter as the afternoon wore on in this 40 over, twelve a side contest. Boundaries were hard to come by but a solid batting display saw everyone who had the opportunity to bat contributing some runs with Sean Tongs (57), Matt Howe (34) and Nardus Grobler (26) all reaching double figures in a 40 over total of 164 for 6
In reply Hythe bowled and fielded exceptionally well to restrict Smarden to 87 all out from 32 overs. The pick of the bowlers being Greg Woods with 7 overs 5 maidens 2 wickets for 2 runs. There were 3 catches for Matt Howe, 2 for Nardus Grobler and 1 for Tom Porter. There were 2 run outs by James Page, 1 by Sean Tongs and there was a stumping by Gary Howe.
So a win for Hythe and a superb fielding performance which received great plaudits from the opposition. Matt Howe picked up Smardens performance of the day award (bottle of bubbly) for his 34 runs and three top catches in wet conditions.
