Sunday 12th August

LAST OVER WIN FOR ROMSEY ACADEMY

A young O.T's & Romsey side beat Hythe by 5 wickets on Sunday with 3 balls remaining, S.Smith hitting a very good 103.

Having won the toss Hythe batted first opening with Tom Porter and Matt Howe. They faced mixed bowling with some overs going for a lot and others being maidens but in the eighth over J Whitehead had Porter caught brilliantly for 9. Captain Rob James joined Howe and both made the most of the batting track and quick outfield playing some lovely shots to put together a partnership of 114 before James was adjudged LBW to Mogg for 48. An over later Howe was given out stumped to J Whitehead for 66.

James Page and Matt Stark replaced them but Stark was bowled for 1 the next over which brought in Tim Bath. Page and Bath batted well until Bath was stumped for 20 by which time they had put on a partnership of 42. Greg Woods replaced him and fed Page the strike so he could continue to score. With just two overs to go, Woods was bowled for 2 and Pete Stevens JNR joined Page. In the penultimate over however Stevens was stumped for 0 then Page bowled for 27. Hythe then declared on a competitive score 201-8.

Pete Stevens JNR and Tim Bath opened the bowling for Hythe and the first few overs went very similarly to OTs and Romsey’s with some going for a lot and some very little. OTs lost their first wicket in the seventh over when Stevens bowled Hillson for 20. He was replaced by Smith who, although hit a lot into the air, kept managing to miss the fielders. In the fifteenth over Greg Woods had Stewart caught by Bowman for 12 but it would be another 17 overs before Hythe had any more success. Smith and new partner Flack continued to ride their luck and a few catches were put down. In Nardus Grobler’s final over he bowled Flack for 26 and then the incoming batsman Mills for 0. Hythe could not manage to get rid of Smith until he had scored 103 when Bath had him caught by Rob James. By this time however the damage had been done and they needed just 9 from 2.4 overs. A tight penultimate over from James kept Hythe in the game until the final over but with 3 balls to go Mogg hit the winning runs, OTs winning by 5 wickets.
