TONY WOODHOUSE TROPHY

Hythe Sunday 2nd XI Vs FAWLEY

Hythe Beat Fawley & Now Need Favour To Win Trophy

Hythe finally beat the Fawley curse in this Tony Woodhouse Trophy Match - beating the oilmen by by 3 wickets. They now need Fawley to beat or draw with Sway next week to take the trophy.

After some deliberation on which pitch was the driest Fawley won the toss and elected to bat first. Richard Last struck in only the second over removing Dean Head for 4. Steve Rollinson joined Cox in the middle and the pair put on 27 before Cox too was bowled by Last for 23. His quick innings containing 4 fours and 1 six.

Lee Powell replaced Moore 0-16 off 4, and struck in his 2nd over having Pedra caught by Chiverton in the gully for 1. 46 for 3 came 50 for 4 when the experienced Rollinson was caught in the covers by Russell Moore off Powell. Sam Clarke and A.Dempsey then dug in to remove the rot - taking the score to 76 before the returning Richard Last claimed his third wicket with a caught and bowled. 76 for 5 then became 84 for 6 when Rollinson jnr was bowled by Chiverton for 2. Clarke at the other end was playing well hitting 3 fours in an innings of 30 before Powell bowled him 118 for 7. At this stage 150 looked possible which would have been difficult for Hythe to chase, but Moore returned to the attack to remove the final three wickets all clean bowled ( one a full toss, one off the batsmans pads and one a beauty) Fawley were all out in the 39th over for 119 with Lawrence Read stranded on 13 not out.

So Hythe had an hour and twenty overs to knock off 120 and got off to a steady start against some fine bowling from Clarke and McCarthy. The first 8 overs going for just 14 runs. Read decided to save Clarke's final four over till later and brought on ex Hythe Colt Matt Head. First ball he had Moore bowled for 12. Hythe 14 for 1 which became 18 for 2 as Ewan Bell fell the same way bowled M.Head for 3. Lawrence Read described Matt Heads 7 overs as the best he had bowled for Fawley ( probably the fact that he was playing Hythe ) as he finished his spell of 7 overs with 2-15. Brother Dean who normally does very well against the green caps was having a different day. Tongs swept him for 4 first ball and his 8 overs went for 1-40.

He did pick up the wicket of Lee Powell for 0 just after Pete Stannett was run out for patient a 9 which gave Hythe a good start. Tongs meanwhile was batting aggresively and qucikly moved into the 20's. But his luck run out when Pedra ( who dropped 5 cathces the week before) clung onto a running catch - Hythe 48 for 5 and the Fawley banter was getting louder as they sensed another win over their rivals.

But Richard Last and the minature figure of Matt Young were going to have non of it as they shared in a match winning partnership of 66 before Last 42 was out with 5 runs needed. By the end of his knock the Fawley banter had reduced to silence as Last's innings included 5 fours in what was a very responsible knock. Thirteen year old Young then fell with the scores level for a very good 24. Steve Rollingson finishing with 3-29 off 7.4 overs.

It was left to Gary Howe to finish off the win with 7 overs to spare.

Hythe collected 17 points and Fawley 4 points. The final game is next week where Sway need to collect 17 points to win the trophy for the first time. If not then the Tony Woodhouse Trophy comes back to Hythe.
