HYTHE SNATCH DRAW IN LOW SCORING GAME

HYTHE SUNDAY XI vs ROBINS

Sunday 22nd July

After heavy rain the previous day had left the square very damp - with a dry day forcasted the decision was made at 10am that with no more rain then a game could go a head. By 2.30 the pitch was still damp but playable and the conditions difficult.

The game went ahead and resulted in an entertaining draw.

Hythe won the toss and elected to bat first a decision Robbie James must have questioned after 2 overs when both Matt Howe and James Page had returned to the pavillion.

Things got even worse when Tongs 6 and Russell Moore joined them Hythe 15 for 4. Paul Whitlock dug in at the other end as he and Grobler looked to get Hythe out of a rut. Whitlock finally went for 23 unusually stumped off the bowling of 14 year old Danny Mills a promising young leg spinner on the books at New Milton. Grobler appeared to be getting use to thew conditions when he was caught off the bowling of Hythe Under 17 - Gregg Woods for 30. Woods bowled 8 overs for 30 in only his second bowl of the season and Robins were grateful to him for filling in.

Ben Smith 13, Like Mills 17 and Rob James 11* all contributed as Hythe got over the hundred mark and finished on 119 all out 10 minutes before tea.

Robins bowld well skipper M.Crossley 3-16 and S.Cox 4-37 the pick of the bowling and young Danny Mills 7-0-22-1

Robins fancied there chances but their innings sufferd the same fate as Hythe's losing two wickets in the first over - both bowled by Willow League Leader Pete Stevens jnr. A prtnership of 40 then occured between Giles 25 and S.Cox 16 before Giles was excellently caught by Page off the bowling of Ben Smith. Smith then dropped a skier in the deep before redeeming himself by catching Cox off the bowling of Robbie James. Lee Powell took over from the top end after Stevens finished with 2-2 off 7. Powell then bowled Spiers for 14. Kermode and Adams batted sensibly but were needng 5 an over to win with 9 overs left. 3 wickets in quick succession then left Hythe needing 2 wickets off the final 2 overs. Robbie James got 2 in 2 when two top catches by Punchey Mills and Lee Powell in the deep was followed by a deserved wicket for Mills when he bowled Adams for 15. With 2 overs remaining the Robins skipper M.Crossley decided 18 was too many to get and decided to close shop for a sporting draw. All the Hythe bowlers did there bit by keeping their economy rates below 3.6 and some of the catches would make 'small hands' Dixon druell with envy.
