HYTHE SUNDAY 2ND XI vs SKANDIA

Sunday 17th June

Sunday 2nd off to Losing Start - But By No Means Disgraced

Hythe Sunday Second XI consisting of 6 colts put in a good display in the field before a poor batting display left them 28 runs short of their target.

Chalky White captained the side in the absence of Gary Howe and his first job was to come to a gentlemans agreement with Skandia skipper Ben Wythe at the toss. The result Hythe took the field.

Ben was soon questioning the decision as all the Hythe bowlers took advantage of the conditions to reduce the visitors to 92 all out in just 25.4 overs.

Steve Chiverton, Harry Smith and the surprised Matt Stark picked up a wicket a piece but it was Under 17 colts spin twins James Carse and Ben Smith that did the damage with 3 wickets a piece. There were catches too for Matt Stark, Ben Smith, Matt Howe and the impressive 12 year old Matt Young behind the stumps.

Hythe batted the 50 minutes before tea with Ewan Bell and Ben Smith opening the innings. The Skandia bowlers soon took to the conditions and when they had Smith caught for 5 and Matt Young for 0 they soon realised that they had a chance.

Hythe also lost Matt Stark 1 and the big wickets of Ewan Bell 5 and Sean Tongs before tea which left them at 20-5.

Things didn't get better after tea as they lost Harry Smith 5 and Matt Howe for 6 pretty quickly. Much depended on skipper Chalky White who looked in determined mood. Unfortunatley the tail didn't support their skipper as James Carse was bowled by Ambe for 4 and Chiverton gave his wicket away bowled by the same bowler for 0. Pete Stannett (playing alongside his grandson to achieve a personal ambition) stayed around to support Chalky in his one man show but when Stannett was caught behind for 5 White was left stranded on 23 not out and Hythe were all out for a disappointing 64 just 29 runs from victory.

A good opening game for the Second XI before their Triangular Trophy with Fawley and Sway. With Gary Howe back fit that will make a big difference to the Batting strength, but don't take anything away from the youngsters they represented the club well in the field and were a credit to the Green Cap.
